I find it hard to believe Gen Z workers are widely signing off emails with things like "best vibes."What do you think? Is this happening a lot, or is this article just trying to stir things up?https://scoop.upworthy.com/gen-z-company-shows-how-their-employees-sign-off-on-emails-and-its-simply-brilliant-565926#email #GenZ #etiquette #vibes

@grammargirl I think it depends on the industry and role. I have worked at a few big tech companies and never saw that.

@grammargirl They also don't know how to write a formal email. It's all very compressed and effective, but not really fit for customer consumption in most cases.

@grammargirl Miyamoto Musashi, the original kensei or "sword-saint," said, "If I have defeated one man, I have defeated a hundred. If I've defeated ten men, I've defeated a thousand."When I hear about one thing like this, I assume that it has happened a hundred unreported times. That still may not make it statistically significant or a sustainable trend. And it may happen more at small, edgy marketing firms than corporate behemoths.

@grammargirl I don’t know - and I feel old now that I see something like this. Office culture is full of so many routines and unwritten rules and many of them aren’t necessary or even enjoyable, I hope they do shake things up.I am also neurodivergent. I would rather sign my emails “ everything’s shiny, not fret” then navigate another minefield of subtexts that I cannot understand.I thought Gen X would be the ones to shake up the establishment. Hopefully the kids are better.

@grammargirl I've not seen it, but I fully support it.Makes me think of the ending to the last note I received from a dear friend: "Thanks again for the well wishes, properly packaged in the official California unit thereof (the vibe)."

@grammargirl Depends entirely on context - I work in a public HS, and I've seen similar things between people who are familiar with each other, but never to an administrator. Also have never seen it rise to the level of cursing.

@grammargirl absolute nonsense, I think they were just looking for advertising.Office culture is never this informal, but at th board level you bet it’s informal - just not as contrived as this

@grammargirl sign offs are highly dependent on the target. How many recipients had that email, of which rank and how well does the sender know them?An email to a tiny group of friend colleagues? I can totally see it, and even wilder versions. But that choice would probably change if the CEO was copied as well.

@grammargirlI'm suspicious about any article that targets a young generation that's moving into adulthood. I'm an early millennial myself. This article doesn't seem to disparage Gen Z, though. They may write their emails to each other like this, but I'm sure they still know how to "formal" it up for an older audience if they need to. They know how to talk to their parents.

@grammargirl I've yet to see it where I work, for which I'm very thankful. This feels super click-baity to me though, as do all "this generation does _________" or "won't believe ________" posts.

@grammargirl "a fair few members of the older generations viewed (and still view) order, structure, hierarchy, dress code and maintaining the status quo as more important than work itself."This whole article is nothing but trolling, and the writer knows it.I don't sign my emails the same way I did when I was just starting out. Nor will these people as their careers mature.Signing off with "best vibes" to a contemporary you're on really good terms with, as an informal "I see you"? Fine. I can buy that. What this article describes is early-career workers experimenting with language without the guidance of ordinary norms. Lots of people experiment at this stage in their careers, and later learn what's going to fly and isn't.If this organization's culture is as described, it is not long for this world. An experienced manager might give constructive feedback. Customers and clients give feedback by taking their business elsewhere.

@grammargirl Best vibes is awful. You know what bugs me? Phrases like "The more money you make, the less sensitive you are to the poor" have morphed into "The more money you make, you become less sensitive to the poor". Or, "The more you read, the more you'll retain" has become "The more you read, you retain more". I'm seeing it far too often lately.
