I think that more than two thirds of things happening in "tech" are cargo cults. As developers we've decided to pick weird and quirky problems to solve instead of user issues. It sucks and hurts the profession.

@tante If a lot of people were honest, they’d be describing their projects as “What if spreadsheets, but somehow even worse!” and to be fair that is an achievement of sorts.

@tante I'm am engineer and the idea to pick more or less quirky problems, instead doing what needs be done in the projects on my desk, seems alien. Does a relevant number of software devs have that autonomy?

@tante we aren’t even solving any problems, not even quirky or irrelevant ones. We randomly explore solution space and then desperately try to map our findings backwards to problem space in order to sell whatever nonsense we found

@tante On a high level, software development organizations acknowledge this fact by introducing product management roles. However, the entire industry became like a black hole, there are enough developers to become a sales target. These two thirds just sell to itself and suck everything else into it.
