If you click a link on Twitter, you get this message:I learned about the problem when someone told me that they can't link to my blog post.Strange things are still happening with my "follow" list on Twitter. I am steadily losing followers but also steadily gaining new followers, many of whom are either sleeper accounts (from before 2010 and appear to have been reactivated) or liberals joining Twitter since November.It's almost as if someone wants me to think I still have lots of followers.

Yes, something to do with API.I told my husband (an IT guy) that people on Twitter are getting an error message. He asked if it was a 404 and I said "no something about API" and he said that's serious. Me= tech talk sounds like gibberish. Give me a legal document to read instead.

@Teri_Kanefield For relative values of 'serious.' It could be as simple as a config setting not being fully propagated. It probably is a bellwether of lost institutional knowledge.

@Teri_Kanefield it is definitely really bad! The API is the thing behind basically the entire website. When parts of it break... things start to break in exciting and unexpected ways, fixing it is usually complicated especially after you fire everyone with knowledge of how things are interconnected 🤣

@Teri_Kanefield Imagine two computers sending each other data with a specific address and using one delivery company. Only computer A says, wrong address and never opens it due to bad address data. This is something wrong with the interface code making transfer of data back and forth between that two impossible with that "address". That is a coding issue. My hubby also writes code, although I don't mind listening. I have learned a few things along the way. lol

@Teri_Kanefield You could add spaces to your link so Twitter won't try to interpret it as a link: something like terikanefield . com / why_mastodon and tell people to remove the spaces. People were resorting to that when Musk was banning all links to Mastodon.

@Teri_Kanefield Awesome! there's tons of tribal knowledge at companies like Twitter too, documentation is often one of the things neglected in order to develop features faster or other priorities. There's no doubt a call bridge right now where they're all running around trying to put out small fires any one of which may or may not fix the problem 😬

@Teri_Kanefield Yes I noticed that over there too. I even posted a link that was broken on the :birdsite: by adding a space after the https (and told people to copy/paste to location bar and remove space as twitter is broken). Ugly workaround.

@Teri_Kanefield Looks like something wasn't tested properly in a non production environment before installing it. Basically the "t dot co" domain is a link shorten-er & tracker. Under the hood this server is using "A Programming Interface" to look up the original link and tell your browser to go there as a redirect response. However with them trying to charge for use of this API, this broke the shorten-er!

@Teri_Kanefield It was error code 467, but I don't recall seeing that error code before and my husband wasn't familiar with it either. I tried to look it up, and never really got a clear answer on what it was besides the API reference in it.

I see each such incident as an opportunity to urge people to create a Mastodon account if nothing else as a strategic hedge against what looks more and more like the inevitable Twitter collapse.Far better to spend some time bringing your followers over to Mastodon while you and they still can. Should Twitter fail and you've not done so you/they will be SOL!
