So I’ve recently gotten into firearms as an adult. I grew up around them—having owned a number of pellet guns and .22’s. My family, being mostly conservative, all own firearms. As a leftist person I can tell you it’s very interesting. For the most part—my house had been solidly mixed politics. So to me, having a firearm never seemed political. Of course, now that I’m older I see the strong identity that certain groups have regarding firearm ownership. Which I think is pretty dumb, and frankly, downright concerning. But I don’t want to address the politics too much in this post and more about just everything else. 1/N

Firstly, I really really dislike how dishonest some folks are with firearms. Like they misquote statistics or just flat out lie. The fact of the matter is your chances of dying from a firearm are dramatically higher if you own them. That’s an indisputable fact. In general, if you have kids and own firearms—they are more likely to be killed by the firearms you possess than any other firearms in existence. So if you have children, keep that in mind. This is an important thing to know an understand. And I know gun safes and all that help—but kids can be crafty. And if they know mommy or daddy keep a key behind the 3rd book on the left of the book shelf, they’re going to get into it. 2/N

For the most part, the reality is most people are chill. You shouldn’t really need to concealed carry anywhere. Statistically, again, you’re not likely to find yourself in a situation needing a firearm. The gun culture here is where the politics creep in. I’ve lived and worked in a variety of areas from poverty to wealth. And I can assure you that most folks are just trying to go about their day. MOST people, as in like 99.999999% of people, are not out to kill you. Your chances of actually needing a firearm in a situation are going to be pretty damn low.

@miketheitguy Pretty sure I read that even carrying a knife merely increases your chances of being stabbed to death with your own knife.

Looking at data, robberies in California for 2021 was 43,628. That means in California, there were 5 robberies per hour across the state. I’ll do the math here in a bit but the reality is the odds of you being in a position of being needing to use a firearm are pretty much slim to none. Especially since most of the time you’re at work, or at home in bed.

@BarrenPlanet more than likely. Though I don’t know the details on that. The gun one is because easy access to firearms results in higher incidences of self harm and such. Among other things. Accidents/Mishandling.
