One of his best videos so far imho.I totally agree and couldn't have said it any better. This habit of giving away all of _your_ stuff to some cringe foreign company (I'm not a 🇺🇸 citizen) and therefore giving up on the last bits of technological independence nowadays just drives me nuts! Some cloud services offer nice conveniences for sure. It's fine to use them, but you should never depend on them - you should always have at least a local copy of your files.

For one moment let's have a thought for the normies watching this content on Youtube/Google cloud. Or even watching it on a Cloudflare/AWS infrastructure hosted website 🙏🏿Your rant can be expanded to companies/State's level. For instance, french social security data are hosted, analyzed by US private third parties. If anything goes whoopdidoo, we're screwed. It's like the 6th world power cannot afford server infrastructures for their central data. Same goes for a lot of rich countries actually. They offshore what could be done more securely locally. Apparently, a week ago Finland started also letting a private third party UK based company analyze and resell their citizens data. Not only does it hinder basic citizens' freedom by compromising their privacy, but it also makes the States in question way less resilient in case of some geopolitics blackmail storm or "unexpected shark attacks holocausts on intercontinental submarine communication cables".All of this not for lack of local technical expertise, but simply cost reduction. Those short-time driven mentalities are infectiously spreading across all connected computing, all generations, all social classes.Somewhat, i agree on those reactionary rants you make on tech, the Lords stole our lands and we have to reacquire what's rightfully ours =]

I have always thought about making a zoomer/boomer friendly torrenting frontend that looks like netflix but just has the piratebay database and easier downloading just so people can get back into torrenting. It is literally so easy to torrent but people seem to prefer spending all this money to watch one show off netflix and one show off hulu and so on, so a frontend would be good. Also i should say that modern laptops come with a 256GB SSD and no way to upgrade so there is really no choice but to use these big servers.

Luke, I feel like your boomer rants are becoming more and more banal. I hope you come up soon with something more substantial and interesting like your take on net neutrality. By the way, I’d be interested how you keep your mails and your other files synchronized across different machines. That would be a nice video!

@luke@videos.lukesmith.xyz on 5 August 2019 India banned internet in occupied Kashmir and till today high speed mobile internet is still down.it was like for around 8 months, there was absolutely a blackout and the decision to have my work docs on a network share and not go the "cloud" saved my business. I could work offline with the software that I had installed and no updates meant a lot of professional grade softwares which expect internet daily straight up failed to run after some time but in the end it worked out fine. but that was when I had data on me. in late February 2020, some fixed line internet was allowed but it was whitelisted nonsense. like 400 websites were accessible, thats it. the fees for it was also massive but work being work we had to shell out bucket loads of cash.the situation is that there is no mobile high speed internet today. you either get fixed line fiber connection which costs and there needs physical feasibility in the location or you are out of luck.
