@stux biggest issue of all this is there is no requirement for China to conquer Taiwan. It is Xi vanity idea (same as Putin's was Ukraine). I would even argue it is counter to China security interests, because it pulls USA in, which is biggest and will be biggest China trading partner for foreseeable future.

@stux I think the indigenous people of Taiwan would like a word. The current regime invaded after they lost to Mao and of course the US subsidized them throughout the 50s and 60s and are still subsidizing their military. Of course, that was just the latest in a long series of takeovers. Nothing is simple.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republic_of_Formosa

@stux the situation between Taiwan and PRC is very complex. While we should stand in solidarity with the Taiwanese, we did that before Nixon going there, and relations were icy. Granted, Chiang Kai-Shek's regime in Taiwan wasn't much better (our cold war policy is "better dead than red"), now it's different seeing as China is more authoritarian capitalist and Taiwan is an authentic democratic republic.

@stux This is based on what I have seen. Looking through the polls I see that about 8-16% of Taiwanese people want “reunification”. That figure has decreased since 2020. I’ve seen a lot of Taiwanese actors in Chinese film and tv shows, it’s where the big money is.
