For a vast number of #YouTube videos, the urge to skip everything up to the host finally saying (after a seemingly endless introduction) -- "let's get into it!" -- can be overpowering.

@lauren the new youtube scrubber bar is great, because it counts skipping ahead and then moving back 'replays' so you can usually tell where the intro and sponsorships end now

@NireBryce I also skip all VPN sponsorships. If a creator has them regularly, I often drop my sub from their channel.

@lauren @NireBryce When I started paying for premium I skip everything that isn’t the content I want to see including all in video ads or sponsorships. I think I saw a breakdown once that premium subscriber watch time is more lucrative than other monetization outside of channel memberships including sponsor spots. No idea if that’s accurate though.

@bflipp @NireBryce I happily sub to YT Premium. That's my direct contribution to the YT creator ecosystem.

@lauren Not as overwhelming as the urge to hit the back button.

@lauren There's the 'Wadsworth Constant' meme where you skip the first 30%. In my experience, if it's a 'how to do a thing with software' where you need to see 10 or so mouse clicks to gain knowledge, you have to skip to around 95%

@lauren I wish that a web page was as easy for content creators to monetize as a Youtube video. That it's not results in our current situation where (comparatively) nobody writes up useful information on the web anymore. So you go searching for info on repairing your dishwasher or what tool you need to reach that damned bolt in the back of your car's engine bay or whatever, and you have to watch a 5-10 min video instead of just reading 20 words. And of course, it isn't searchable.

@lauren I do not resist that urge. Same with most articles online. Skip to the final paragraph or two. If it’s good, then go back and read/view the entire thing.

@cazabon Given that most people apparently can't read past a third grade level, the decision to use video seems imminently logical.

@lauren Automatic chapter marking for that point.
