#askFedi #askFediverse:boostswelcome:OK, so in the general scheme of the UK falling apart (eat turnips, don't protest, be poor) there is a distinctly non-zero chance that the Signal messaging app may no longer be available. We are well aware of it's limitations, but compared to the Meta ecosystem having our social graph, it's quite usable for family and friends. So, what's a good alternative?Have half an eye on Briar, which we haven't used for a while, but is seemingly in active development. Primarily access via Android, as most people we know are on there for mobile use. Linux desktop access would be good too.Security is in the privacy interest, not protection from state actors, though security is good, we need to onboard non-geeks.Boosts and suggestions welcome. We are in no hurry, but just looking to be prepared.Thank you lovely people.--- Signal says it'll shut down in UK if Online Safety Bill approvedhttps://www.theregister.com/2023/02/25/signal_uk_online_safety_bill/

@Magess @coth I'm liking the Matrix/Element combination. Plenty of alternatives, but, I haven't tried them all.

@fitheach @Magess @coth yeah, Matrix/Element seems also the best choice for all I know. I've heard some people complain about missing/delayed notifications with the Android app (probably because the version on F-Droid doesn't include push notifications via Google API?), but somehow I've never had any problems with it. The Element Desktop app is Electron, just like Signal, but it's nothing else than the website wrapped into another browser.

@daniel_bohrerI sometimes have the web UI (Element) open as well as the Android app. Typically, (depending on polling times) the app is about 25 seconds behind the web UI @Magess @coth

@coth Briar, Session, and SimpleX are all good alternatives, though I'd be interested to understand how they'd go about shutting Signal down. You don't need to install it from the official app stores, and Signal don't need to have servers in the UK.

@stannard not if they require the client to be bugged, which realistically is the only way they could bypass encryption of the protocol.@coth

@fitheach @Magess @coth Matrix is the best secure chat option besides Signal. It's federated, it has client apps on mobile and desktop, it is easy to deploy and maintain, and it can host Discord-like spaces with multiple chatrooms. Very powerful and underrated service.
