So, after a week or so of steady over 1000 new masto accounts per hour, in the last day it's dropped to 500 to 600 per hour (still much higher than in January), but anyone know why this is happening? (This is all per @mastodonusercount of course).

@mmasnick @mastodonusercount A dropdown box on the sign-on page(s) could capture something about why someone signs up. That'd be useful for analytics downstreamWhat brought you here?1) Referral from individual2) Referral from organization, project or team3) Mention in news article or broadcast4) Refugee from Twitter etccc @Gargron @atomicpoet @kainoa

@mmasnick @mastodonusercount @Gargron @kainoa @atomicpoet Thanks MM. I'd been thinking about a "suggest edits" bot for just this use case.

@shoq @mmasnick @mastodonusercount @Gargron @kainoa All of this is conjecture. However, Mastodon usually grows when Twitter does something stupid. And to be honest, the bad news about Twitter has kind of slowed during the past two days. Usually, it's easy for me to find bad news about Twitter. But look at my feed today. It's practically bare. Mind you, Hootsuite just destroyed its free tier probably because Twitter demands big payments. But who cares about Hootsuite nowadays?

@shoq @mmasnick @mastodonusercount @Gargron @kainoa But I'll tell you this much. Once Pixelfed finally releases its mobile apps, I suspect there's going to be more growth.

@atomicpoet @shoq @mmasnick @mastodonusercount @Gargron @kainoa I wonder if the spike in signups the past week was because of the scandal with Spoutible. A lot of Twitter users had been waiting for Spoutible. and the Courtney Milan / Christopher Bouzy thing caused a bit of an impassion for Bouzy.

@Teri_Kanefield @atomicpoet @mmasnick @mastodonusercount @Gargron @kainoa That's a good point and could be spot-on, Teri. On the other hand his users hadn't been all that active, and it's been alleged that thousands of them were bots anyway. I just wish we had fewer distractions from projects trying to recreate a model that we know is broken. It's hard enough to educate people about how and why the verse should be our future.

@mmasnick @mastodonusercount Every time there's been a boost in Twitter exiles, it slows down after a week.

@snarkysteff @mastodonusercount yeah, but the peaks and valleys were bigger and more clearly tied to an event. this is... not as clearly explained. it went up to around 1000 a week ago and then just stayed steady state, and now just dropped. It wasn't a spike like in the past.

@mmasnick @snarkysteff @mastodonusercount I went over to Twitter today. It is really dead. Other than Buttigieg, there is no big story. And the big accounts can't seem to create some outrage narrative that is sticking. Engagement is really down. Accounts that frequently got likes over 5% of their total followers are coming in at .05%. And I think there are many people choosing to decrease their time on Twitter and social media in general. They aren't looking for another platform.

@Hey_Beth @mmasnick @snarkysteff @mastodonusercount I follow half a dozen hardcore accounts for news. Today I got bored waiting for several of them to tweet something. It's definitely sluggish, and boring.
