Tons of drugs that you can legally get and ruin you with addiction, dentists legally prescribe opiates for wisdom teeth extraction, 5% after 3 days are hooked, lives often destroyed. Benzos 1 out of 20 people just using normal amounts have horrific withdrawal within 8 months, it jumps to roughly half after 8 months, the way he uses them as candy it is going to be very rough. >In the small subgroup of individuals who escalate their doses[of xanax] there is usually a history of alcohol or other substance use disorders.

@ggf @Jim Sounds like you’re talking about what I’ve seen described as “drug seeking behavior” which has a spectrum in humans. For Ralph we’re not talking different types of drugs to zeroth approximation, both ethanol and Xanax/alprazolam hitting GABA in particular. But from what I’ve read since, well, middle elementary school when Nixon shifted towards public health (yes, stop laughing) or as some say ended for a time the war on drugs, if denied one class of drugs many will seek out others. I suppose you could also break them down into, what, stimulants, depressants, and psychedelics and they’d have much greater substitutability inside those.Getting to nits, while I’ve only filled a prescription of opiates when I got shingles (seriously consider getting the vaccine when you turn 50 if you have gotten chickenpox, a “forever” herpes virus that hides out in your nervous system cells (!)), I do worry that the crusade against opiates for some time has been causing more harm than good. Personally, that I won’t be able to access them legally if I really need them someday, and I see a lot of bad science on its side as well as of course as we did from the (((Sackler’s))) etc.Funny thing, a great uncle of the Sacklers who did the controlled-release oxycodone AKA Oxycontin scam is per Wikipedia the founder of modern marketing to healthcare workers back in the 1950s. That was good for example for the antiseptic Betadine/povidone-iodine, but I couldn’t help but notice he also was involved in the promotion of Valium/diazepam, which has a higher addiction potential than any other benzodiazepine we’ve been discussing due to its short action time when taken by mouth. While it was still under patent protection ads for it were ubiquitous in the doctor’s magazines I looked at in the late-ish 1970s, and, hey, benzodiazepines are massively safer than the barbiturates they replaced, but….As for “horrific withdrawals” from this class of drugs, how many are from people trying to do it (too) quickly?Which brings us back to the other issue that all these classes of depressants as well as stimulants like the amphetamines result in tolerance, which is one of the arguments I’ve yet to examine against long term opiate prescription for chronic pain. Thus taking them for “too long” is by definition dangerous.
