@kairyssdal I signed a contract with a contractor to build my house, but now I realize that I hadn't decided that I was able to take on that much debt, so I'm just not going to pay.

@kairyssdal You are using academic language and expecting them to use critical thinking, which a large minority are unable to do and resent the expectation. Remember, of the generations that graduated high school before 1995, 25% are functionally illiterate.

@kairyssdal I think most Americans believe in borrowing and paying our debts, but a sizable minority believe in borrowing and figuratively skipping town. They don't want to acknowledge the consequences of default.

@kairyssdal My guess is it's a branding thing: "debt limit" sounds totally reasonable and good. Maybe "self imposed and totally arbitrary line of financial chaos" would be better?
