This story feels telling, given how much GPT seems optimized to spit out bland corporatese. https://vanderbilthustler.com/2023/02/17/peabody-edi-office-responds-to-msu-shooting-with-email-written-using-chatgpt/

@misty I'm so very not surprised that this is Vanderbilt, either. The same Vanderbilt whose HR mandated a crapton of happy-happy-joy-joy garbage in all its job postings until Library Twitter called it out over a librarian posting.

@dsalo Oof. I'd missed that but that sounds about right given this.

@misty We're in a stage of new tech where social norms are being established. If they had utilized AI to create an initial draft, and then revised it to reflect their own style, we may not be having this discussion. If we discovered that they used AI to compose their marketing material, it wouldn't be a point of interest. Regardless, this action has contributed to a new social standard - simply copying and pasting from AI output is insufficient when responding to a tragedy.

@misty I think the degree to which people are totally fine using/reading AI-generated pulp makes me realize that they've always treated writing as just an information delivery method, or think that reading a Wikipedia summary is the same thing as watching a movie, etc. Very easy to distrust those people

@jseggers I mean, not only is the message impersonal, it’s not even accurate. These messages serve a specific social purpose and it seems like the sender didn’t consider that at all when getting GPT to do it.

@misty Agreed - they let the AI do the "thinking." Too much faith in technology and a complete misunderstanding of the purpose of AI.
