Most of the people on the Left and Right pushing for changes to Section 230 have absolutely NO clue as to the enormous scale involved in UGC (user generated content) and why their opposing "solutions" are doomed to decimate it and destroy users' choices. Part of the fault lies in the platforms themselves, who have failed to explain the situation to the public in anything even approaching an adequate manner.

@lauren How are the social media companies handling things in countries/jurisdictions that don't have that kind of law?

@jannem There hasn't been much difference to date. The best parallel is the new push in the UK that would impose all sorts of bans on content and create new ID requirements. Note that there is a push here in the U.S. at both the state and federal level to require most use of the Internet to require government IDs to permit government tracking of usage and prove that you are an adult to view any content not "appropriate" for children.

@lauren How much of the new Facebook fee is to make money and how much is about the escalation of costs of running the network? (While Apple and the EU make ads less profitable).

@jameslove @lauren Apple's iOS privacy change has really cut into Facebook's revenue. Without complete control of its platform (like Apple/Microsoft/Google), Facebook is at a disadvantage.

@david1 @jameslove It's ironic that Apple's claims of being pro-privacy are to a large extent actually just financial greed in disguise.

@lauren Yet when it comes to piracy or performing rights issues they all managed to come up with the technical solutions that seem very effective. When you look at how effective LLMs are it does seem that this is just a matter of cost and will power.

@davebyrne I suspect you've never seen the actual metrics. Errors and 3rd party abuse rates on these systems are usually very high, even within their well-defined scopes. And significant expansion of those scopes will almost certainly drive both of these factors up by many orders of magnitude, and make effective moderation and appeal channels impractical even with infinite money to pay human moderators. The result will be, as I've said, a drastic reduction in willingness to host UGC at all, and protective takedowns will increase enormously -- exactly the opposite of what the Right wants, by the way!
