I envision Musk being outraged that Zuckerberg is getting more money for a blue checkmark than him and raising his price. "If people will pay $13 for Facebook, then they'll pay $20 for Twitter because I am a genius!"Wouldn't it be fun to watch if that led to an ego-driven back-and-forth that left them both with prices around $100 and no subscribers!

@grammargirl Maybe. He’s prone to irrational lunging, but Facebook is 10X (or more) the size of twitter in DAU, and has a much better advertising platform. I perceive this initiative being targeted at smaller advertisers. In one respect, it’s essentially an attempt at a solution to the SPAM/impersonation problem that local public figures and businesses face, often with little recourse.

@grammargirl super curious as to how they've arrived at these verification subscription fees . . .

@grammargirl these are two Very Smart Men, and thus would use algorithms to price their services relative to the other, so I’m hoping for one of those Amazon used book situations where two sellers’ algorithms keep pushing the price until you’ve got worn copies of Showbiz Tricks for Ferrets priced in the high four figures. 🙏 🤞

@grammargirl On the positive side, subscription-based social media flips the economics. It makes the user of the paying customer instead of being the product. If social media platforms start competing on quality of service for the users, that would be a good thing.

@grammargirl I am also waiting for subscription-based search services. Used to be I could Google “eggplant Parmesan recipe“ and get hits with a good recipe and some user comments. Now I get sites so filled with ads, it’s hard to actually find the recipe. Google is obviously optimizing for expected ad revenue, not expected user utility. I’d be willing to pay a modest subscription fee for a search service that really tried to meet my needs rather than advertiser’s needs.

@statesdj I hear people like DuckDuckGo for search. https://duckduckgo.com/?q=eggplant+parmesan+recipe&t=h_&ia=recipes

@grammargirl I think the worst thing about these paid verification schemes is that it’s a fundamental misunderstanding of what verification was for, at least on Twitter. It was literally just confirmation that this is the person they say they are. This is the real LeVar Burton, etc.
