I had a ridiculously detailed dream last night. When I woke up, I felt compelled to instantly start working on a crude game design document because I was so damn excited by the idea! Once I started writing, more exciting ideas started pouring out. I am NOT a video game designer. I don't code. But I think this game idea has legs. I've also learned to never ignore these ideas that originate in your dreams. So I guess the big question is: NOW WHAT š¹ļø š¤#Inspiration #Gaming #GameDev #HelpWanted

@killyourfm Make a prototype in something simple and free like GDevelop (which is awesome btw). Gamedev ideas are often the easy bit, I have hundreds. Finding the time and energy to implement them, less so :)

@dma Thanks Dominic, I appreciate your willingness to help! Can I start with a question that must keep many game makers up at night? How do you collaborate on an idea with the community (e.g. helpful strangers or even partners), while *protecting* that idea from being stolen and used by someone else?

@killyourfm I'm working on a game in my spare time as well. It's my first go at doing a 3d game in general but doing it in VR. Just seeing if I have a fun game first before actually committing time to it. Basically I want to make Savage2 but with VR and first person players mixed.

@shanefagan anything with VR seems ambitious, but only because game development still feels like magic to me. I wish you luck and inspiration. Hope you can see it through eventually!

@killyourfm Well it is and it also isn't, it makes the visual aspects hard but controls and visuals are mostly the same as any 3d game at least from my limited usage. What gets me is game design is basically a bottomless pit you can get stuck in. The RTS part was hard. First thing I made in the game was that, I just did battleship but basically any micro intensive game would be impossible for 1 person to dev I think. Either way learning and being a better dev in general.

@mdiluz @popey pick one and make it. It write a short story in the gameās world. Or hum the theme song. This applies to both of you. Life is too short to have so many unrealised ideas that will fade into nothingness.

@killyourfm @sirmikester Kickstarter without a very demo is not going to work. However paying people is the easiest way to make your game. You just probably can't afford to do it.

@killyourfm Does your game idea have a lot of elements to it? Like there is farming, combat, puzzles, etc. If so probably the best way to start is to make smaller games with only part of your vision of the game. Make those fun and release them. That can build fan base which might allow you to find collaborators. Another option is build a boardgame. Paper prototypes to prove a game is fun is a good idea and can be demoed to people. As others said I wouldn't worry about people stealing your idea.

@killyourfm If you do decide to try to implement it, I've used godot and recommend it but if you lack programming experience it can be rough. There are various game creators that specialize in generes. They may be easier for non programmers but they limit what you can easily do and you still need to learn some programming logic for the scripting in the system.

@JubalBarca @killyourfm Second this! A game is not just a cool idea. Actually a lot of great games are pretty unimaginative. What matters is great execution! And that is extremely hard to do, thus also really hard to steal. It's also worth mentioning that a LOT of game ideas sound cool at first, but work terrible in practice! I'd compare it to drawing: It's fairly easy to imagine something cool in your head, but significantly harder to put that vision on paper!

@dulsi Thank you for your knowledge, and for taking the time to share it here! It contains mostly driving mechanics, some light mapping/pathfinding, and a roguelite gameplay flow and upgrade system, so building out multiple demos probably won't be necessary. I LOVE the idea of a paper prototype though! I could even generate some art and rudimentary landscapes/characters with Stable Diffusion or Midjourney. You've got my wheels turning. I appreciate you!

@killyourfm I donāt have time to help with this myself but I can testify I do much of my best designing and problem solving in my sleep. Not so much game ideas as solutions within a game idea. In fact when I have a particularly thorny problem I try and fall asleep with it on my mind as if Iām very lucky I wake up with a few solutions. š

@edddeduck This is fascinating to me, because I believe in giving yourself "busy work" that's mindless enough to let your subconscious work out a problem. But I've never heard of people doing it repeatedly in their sleep. Do you meditate on the problem before you go to sleep? Any particular routine you stick to?

@killyourfm If you do decide to go that route, I would recommend using GPL v3 for the source code and possibly CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 to protect your game's assets. If you want to, you can also sell the source code and assets on Itch.io rather than share them publicly on GitHub. Take a look at Thrive and @liblast (by @unfa).https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/https://revolutionarygamesstudio.com/releases/

@killyourfm This is a multipart answer as itās hard to easily articulate.I hasten to add the sleep method is very hit or miss but it has come up trumps enough times for me to do things to encourage it to happen.I first noticed the general location or theme of my dreams are influenced by the things I had been doing before going to sleep. So for example if I watched a basketball documentary about Larry Bird my dream could be linked to Basketball either in staging, characters etc.

@killyourfm Yes! We do need to make good, modern, ethical open-source games! As @ProfessorCode mentioned - my main project now is @liblast , and it's licensed under AGPL + CC-BY-SA for that exact reason. We also use 100% FOSS to make the game starting from the engine, to asset production to git hosting to team comms, whiteboarding etc.

@killyourfm I would make a short, concise video presenting your idea, and post that to places like Godot Forums (Godot is an amazing, quickly growing open-source game engine) saying that you're looking for help and advice on how you can make this game, or maybe to make a team to do it.I think that's what I'd do if I didn't know anything technical about making games.https://godotforums.org/But also - ideas aren't much before they are at least prototyped. So maybe learn the ropes and DIY?

Not just from a game play standpoint but how you offer a Peertube option; are on Mastodon and use Open Collective for donations. It's from top to bottom how I would like a project run.
