@ygalanter @lauren I think it's highly ironic that Twitter started out before the days of smart phones, and so the way you tweeted was through SMS.

@EricCarroll @PJ_Evans @lauren 56! That was nirvana. Then, bonus points to me - I had actual ISDN for a time!Extra bonus points - this was 1998 - and a Telsat Canada demo satellite Internet dish (using DirectPC tech) that gave me about 25MB down, with the return via ... a 56k modem! They set it into my backyard and we wrote it in the 1999 book, predicting that one day, satellite-based Internet would be a BIG thing.Epic times!

@jimcarrollYa telephony return was a thing in cable land for a while as people tried to avoid a 2 way capable plant rebuild. I was in the "that's a really stupid idea" camp. @PJ_Evans @lauren

@EricCarroll @jimcarroll @lauren It kind of made sense if you were in a rural area, with no chance of cable and all calls being toll.

@PJ_Evans @EricCarroll @jimcarroll There are still rural areas -- even right here in L.A. County, where there is no cable, no Internet (unless you can afford satellite and are in the right spots), and no mobile service.

@PJ_EvansHmm.. It sounded great in marketing brochures but never worked properly. Many tried to kludge it without success. It was the top of the cost ladder & bottom of the performance ladder. It was a fast entry for the satellite providers before they went wideband, & seductive for cable cos who didn't think the Internet was important. The cost structure killed it off in the end.It essentially failed under real traffic load & economic scale up. @lauren @jimcarroll

@lauren @PJ_Evans @EricCarroll Over the years, I've done quite a few keynotes for the National Rural Telecom Cooperate - it's the group charged with trying to bring broadband to rural communities. It's been a huge challenge and continues to be so; satellite like this was always one of the options despite its drawbacks. Progress is slow but steady!

@lauren @EricCarroll @jimcarroll I lived on Burbank Blvd, a couple of blocks west of Sepulveda Basin, and had to walk over to the basin to get good cell service. Go figure...
