"Occam's razor suggests that everyone else has no idea what they are doing with web frameworks and I, and only I, can see the truth, which is that they are bad". I have not eyes enough to roll.

@seldo almost right. "Occam's razor suggests that everyone else has no idea what they are doing with web frameworks and I, and only I, can see the truth, which is that they are bad and that is why you need my web framework"

@seldo Would you agree that someone who calls themself a “React developer” or “Angular developer” might not have ended up doing that as a consequence of carefully considering alternatives? What do you believe the percentage of people like that is? In my experience it’s large and has been growing over the last few years

@stilkov No, I don't agree, and I think it's patronizing to suggest that they didn't consider their career choices like anyone would.

@seldo lol right. Lots of shouting and little discussion and acceptance of input. Then tried using US devices and speeds as a poverty issue when the US has pretty consistent speeds and mostly uses iOS. Of course no response to me asking for where he got his data.

@seldo Choosing “React developer” might be a smart career choice at the moment, but that’s not the point I was trying to make. In fact it affirms it.

@stilkov someone who chooses to specialize in React now is not making an irrevocable choice, so what is your point? They can become other kinds of developers later.

@seldo My point is that what seems to be your metric (if I understand you correctly), namely: the percentage of happy React developers, says little about the suitability of React for the use cases it’s applied to

@stilkov why doesn't it? These people become React developers because it works for them. They try other things and settle on React as their favorite. I have lots of data that says students try every damn framework, but React wins.

@seldo @stilkov Is that why? Reading /r/CSCareerQuestions and most of the “Learn React” advice is based off of job listings explicitly listing React.

@aluhrs @stilkov "There are jobs available" is, as I explain in my original post, part of the network effect that means React wins.

@seldo @stilkov I’m gonna try to find time to write a full post with thoughts. You’re right of course, but I think how we got to the current equilibrium and network effect might not be healthy or sustainable. We’ve hit a cycle of: React devs are readily available -> let’s make our app with React -> more React jobs -> React is the right thing to learn.Whether that cycle is virtuous or vicious? Did we get into it because React is the right solution? I dunno.

@seldo @stilkov My semi-unique qualification (and/or bias) on this topic is that I work on Edge WebView2. I pretty constantly work with developers who feel some pressure to use it because someone else is using it. I push many of them down other routes that are more correct for their product. I could 100% see a world where my team’s goals are different and I’d be more focused on selling and building in the direction of industry breadth, but at a similar cost to Alex’s “Lemons” post.
