Huh, do #British people actually call a one-room apartment a 'bedsit'? I've only ever heard that referred to as a 'studio'.#Poll #Apartments #bedsit #studio

@Jdreben I'm Aussie and they have been traditionally referred to thus here as well although studio is now in more common parlance

@Jdreben Old people call it that. Mum and grandparents call it that.Ive never heard anyone under 50 say it.Its one of those 50s Britishisms that I think just filters out over time. Like calling people Madam.

@Jdreben I'm British. Bedsits and Studio apartments aren't quite the same thing to me. A studio apartment is a self-contained dwelling with all the amenities yours and yours alone. A bedsit is closer to student accommodation in a house where one room is yours, but the kitchen and bathroom amenities are shared with other people in the house with their own bedsits.

@Jdreben What I can tell you is that in Germany a 2-room apartment (large kitchen, small bedroom) is called a 'Wohnkueche' living-kitchen because that's where you spend the most time.

@neonbubble Woah, thank you so much for this explanation.I heard it referenced on "My Lover My Killer" which I'm watching on Hulu. Today I learned!

@Jdreben a bedsit isn't the same thing, a studio apartment is a self contained small apartment and a bedsit is a room in a building with shared bathrooms (these days they are legally known as HMOs - houses of multiple occupancy)

@JRBuckley Fascinating. That this would be such a common setup. Is there a greater cultural focus on cooking at home in Germany? Why so many living kitchens is my follow up Q ๐

@Jdreben @wolfie @neonbubble Yeah I had some vague sense that it somehow meant something a bit seedier than just a studio apartment. At least from the way i'd heard it said by the elderlies. This lady is correct I think.

@Jdreben I lived in Germany 1985-97 and these were more like 1-room apartments with a small separate bedroom - not exactly 'family friendly.'

@Jdreben Technically both are valid, but Iโve always said bedsit. I think there may be a perception that bedsits are very basic and cheap, while a studio is a bit more โupmarketโ.

@Jdreben I would say there are blurry edges between the two - a studio will normally be completely self-contained, but a bedsit would be a room, plus shared bathrooms, loos and kitchen (think old student housing).

@Jdreben I've used both o_o;I think studio has come into fashion because it sounds more posh, so estate agents use it.

@bentosmile As is the way. What does bedsit even come from? It definitely sounds worse than Studio.A no-kitchen would make more sense to me. Or a 'single'. Idk.

@Jdreben I presume it's a portmanteau of bedroom and sittingroom XD though I'm just speculating.(They tend to have futons or fold out sofas)

@Jdreben In a studio apartment, you get your own loo. In a bedsitter, it's shared. I went to look at an "art studio" several months ago that was clearly meant to be an illegal bedsit and it had space for a tiny fridge and a little hotplate. However, the classic British cookbook, Cooking in a Bedsitter assumes the reader has no fridge and gives advice on how to store cooked food under the bed without letting mice into it. It was published in 1961. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bedsit
