my new argument for how chat AI will break society is that it’s virtually impossible to understand. most other revolutionary human technology, you can get to some mechanical diagram or analogy that makes enough people go “ok that makes sense.”ChatGPT, I’ve read a dozen explainers and I still only have a very fuzzy idea what’s going on. then it says stuff that sounds straight-up human, and look, I can suspend my belief, but tons of people already believe in magic with a **lot** less evidence.

we’re inches away from someone using this stuff to start a new religion, or an ethical movement to “free” the AIs, or the emergence of any number of conspiracy theories that claim to be able to discern secret patterns revealing hidden knowledge.people imagine they see signs and miracles in the dumbest places, now they’ve invented a technology **specifically designed to act miraculous** (a rock using lightning to hold a conversation).

even just an unethical person or company using a chat AI to develop relationships with lonely people for nefarious purposes. individually, our brains can’t handle this shit, and at the scale of billions of people, ho boy.

@lamasoo I think the difference is he wanted people to worship AI based on an abstract understanding of its greatness. I’m saying that now that there’s a mass-market product, you could do way better by appealing to people who **don’t** understand it.I’m thinking about this way to much.
