so fucking angry. just got off the phone with my credit card's fraud department where they asked me to confirm my identity by **reading back the security code they send me by SMS** i was fucking furious. i just said "no, i'm not going to do that, every single anti-phishing training i have ever taken says not to forward security codes to anyone." guy said "fine" and confirmed with a message to my app instead. but holy shit, what a disaster.

all this stuff about using machine learning to flag fraud must be bullshit too. dude is there reading back "suspicious" transactions to me that i've been making every single month for **years** like, everything is just completely brainless now, they let the algorithm tell them what to do and they have no idea how any of it works.

and the best part is, my credit card got locked/replaced because someone's payment system made a $0 charge to it. did i recognize it? no. was it fraud? maybe! or maybe one of the dumbass companies out of the literally thousands that have my credit card information decided to push a vibe-coded update to their payment transaction system that just pings all the credit cards they have on file for no reason. fucking awesome.

i have a hard time imagining this ending without violence. i would prefer it to be the violence of state security forces in uniforms and judges in robes, but it either ends in violence or it doesn't end.

gotta level with you guys: peaceful protest doesn't work. maybe it used to, but it really hasn't for the last couple decades. for whatever reason, once authoritarian regimes settle in, it has become **very hard** to remove them without violence. i've got a lot of examples. Venezuela, Egypt, Turkey, Nicaragua, Iran.

the last chance i see is that maybe there's enough of a vestige of a democratic state left in the US to pull back from the brink after the midterms, but i don't see Democratic lawmakers and civil society being at all serious about coalescing into the kind of smart, daring opposition/unified front you need to take on an authoritarian project.
