I really wonder how amazing the iPad could be if it wasn't locked down so hard.

Why aren’t #Android tablets more popular?

@realcaseyrollins I don't have any experience with them, but my uninformed guess would be that the hardware in most of them kind of sucks - but that's pure speculation.

@bigzaphod @realcaseyrollins it’s a really valid question. There are lots of decent android tablets. Blaming it on hardware is weak sauce.

@schwa @realcaseyrollins as I said.. speculation. I'd love to know the answer, but then again I don't even know if they're significantly more open to hacking up cool things than an iPad out of the box, either. Are they?

@realcaseyrollins @bigzaphod Nobody develops application specifically targeting that space of device because adoption and fragmentation issues.

@schwa @bigzaphod @realcaseyrollins I suspect it’s a bit of a chicken and egg problem. Alphabet doesn’t invest in the android tabloid software so hardware manufacturers develop “good enough” tablets so Alphabet doesn’t invest in software, and the cycle continues. Add in that third party developers have no incentive to make so-called top-class Android tablet apps (just extra big phone apps) and you get to where we are now.

@bigzaphod @realcaseyrollins yeah you can side load anything you want on an android device.I’ve designed 3D components in a campsite in a National park on my iPad Mini that I later 3D printed at home.I think the iPad is plenty amazing already and one of my favourite devices ever.Im not sure what needs to be more open to make it more amazing.

@schwa @realcaseyrollins I recently looked into running certain emulators on the iPad and there's a ton out there but they aren't allowed in the App Store because of stupid Apple rules and "side loading" them tends to involve Xcode and compiling. One emulator I saw the other day mentioned something about the hypervisor framework and it only working when non-jailbroken if you were tethered to a debugger. Just weird shit like that.

@bigzaphod @schwa @realcaseyrollins I know this is definitely just me, but I never really saw the appeal of running emulators on my iPad. I definitely saw uses cases on a Mac, but not an iPhone or iPad.Likewise, side-loading should be improved, but I still think there should be some friction, even if it’s minimal. I think Android’s approach with a dialog or switch could help in that regard.

@marquiskurt @schwa @realcaseyrollins well it doesn't matter if emulators appeal to one person but not the other, it's the fact that they're basically banned just because Apple says so. Adding side loading might help, but only if the side loading stuff didn't come along with new ridiculous restrictions. I can easily see them allowing side loading but then ban a bunch of important APIs or something, for example.

@schwa @realcaseyrollins as I said, you or Apple shouldn't get to define what people do or do not want to do with their devices. That's kind of the point here, no? Saying "I don't care about that so I don't see the problem" is weak sauce.

@bigzaphod @schwa @realcaseyrollins Funny. I ported Delta emulator to run in a Swift playground because my kid’s school iPads are locked down, but allow installing the playgrounds app.

@Sonikku @schwa @realcaseyrollins it's the principal of the thing, really. Computers were supposed to be ours. I don't do most of these things myself, either, but I sure as hell did when I was younger. So now the younger generation has all these locked down computers and they *can't* do them. They don't get to because some old fart said, "meh" in some meeting.

@bigzaphod @realcaseyrollins when you talk about “how amazing iPads could be” i was hoping for a little more substance than that. Concrete examples beyond playing the original Zelda don’t seem too much to ask for. What else you got? I’m genuinely curious. But I do think the iPad’s popularity over the theoretically more open Android tablets speaks volumes about what people actually want in the non-hypothetical world.

@bigzaphod @schwa @realcaseyrollins Right, that’s why I said “I know it’s just me”, and I didn’t mean to imply that, because I see no value in it, that Apple’s current policies are “right” in any way.On that note, I doubt that there will be additional restrictions. I’m sure they’d very much want that to happen, but it seems to me that, given the way the DMA is written, the EU isn’t going to accept it.

@bigzaphod @realcaseyrollins I would blame the software. (The hardware doesn’t help.) Even more than on iOS, there’s just little interest in making good apps. The iPad really sits somewhere between Android tablets and Windows tablets. The latter are less locked down, but the UX isn’t quite as good.Overall, seems little has happened to move tablets forward in like a decade.

@schwa @realcaseyrollins I said, "I wonder how" so.. I really don't know. We'll never know unless the restrictions are lifted on some of this stuff. In the old days you could change all your mac system icons and people *loved* making their computer their own. Can't really do that anymore for arbitrary "because I said so" reasons. Sure apps can have alt icons, but now your options are limited by individual apps and not your own tastes. It's that whole entire mindset that holds back creativity.

@chucker @realcaseyrollins realistically some of the problem is just that the form factor kind of sucks for certain types of inputs (*cough* text *cough*). It's possible that's the primary problem at the end of the day - but I don't know.

@bigzaphod @schwa @realcaseyrollins so many fantastic Mac apps that I'd love to see on iPad but aren't possible. Raycast and Alfred greatly improve on Spotlight in a number of ways, utilities like XScope that you want to run on top of other apps, or to control sound input and output like Ears.app and all the Rogue Amoeba apps, and other ideas that don’t even exist on Mac but would be super useful on iPad. There's a lot of innovation that could happen there that is stifled.
