Tonight's movie night movie will be, "Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning (2025)." I hope Ethan Hunt finally finishes the reckoning he's been after for all these years. Everyone deserves a little reckoning as a treat.

Sometimes I think it'd be fun to pickup a (very cheap) little PC to try using as a Linux desktop on weekends just to have something different to play with occasionally.I only very briefly tried Linux as a desktop machine back in the early 2000s but never seriously. Once I got a Titanium PowerBook I never looked back, tbh.Unfortunately the reality is it'd probably just sit on my desk and collect dust after the first day, though.

Tonight’s movie night movie will be, “Ballerina: From the world of John Wick (2025).” Hoping for a calm, peaceful film to wind down the day with. Maybe with some dancing and fluffy outfits.

Ballerina was a lot of fun. I really enjoy the weird lore and "mechanics" of the John Wick universe. The whole world is basically a video game and follows video game rules which works just fine for me. Lots of terrific action as you'd expect in a John Wick movie with all sorts of new and innovative ways of earning the R rating for violence.John Wick himself is in the movie, but he's not the focus and they did a great job of not making it about him at all - instead Eve really gets to shine.

Woke up with my ring finger and hand tingling a bit and in a weird panic state. I've had that happen before where my brain latches on to the source of the tingling as my wedding band pinching my finger or something so I'll slip it off a bit until the brain settles down.Except today I couldn't get the ring off. And hooo boy did my brain start freaking out.Normally I can slip my ring off and sometimes I do that while thinking or even watching TV - just moving it past the knuckle and back.

But for some reason, I can't do that today and I'm freaking out. With much pain, I did manage to get it off but now I'm afraid to put it back because it feels like I'll never get it off again. And my finger is swollen now too.Brains are stupid.I might need to get my ring resized.

Of course right now my hand feels totally wrong without it there and I'm freaking out in a different way paranoid I'm going to lose it now.Generally speaking I never take it off - just slip it past my knuckle and back to reassure myself it's not stuck. This is why I don't wear ties or necklaces or fancy collars.

Meanwhile my wife's ring is like.. growing into her finger and she says she likes it better that way because then she knows it's never going to slip off and get lost.I'd be in the ER with a panic attack if that happened to me, I think.

Ok, I went to Walmart and spent a whooping $3 on a pack of silicone rings and am now wearing a silicone ring instead. It's a bit wider than my regular ring and since it's silicone, it's not very slippery and doesn't move which is kinda weird... but... we'll see how this goes.My finger will probably un-swell itself in a day or two and probably can fit my normal ring back on but we'll see.I guess if this works, I could spend a whole $20 to get a slightly nicer and better made silicone ring. 🙂

The upshot of a silicone ring is that it can also be safer - if it got caught in a machine or something, it could snap or deform enough to be pulled off rather than taking my entire finger/hand/skin with it.So that's a nice potential bonus. It just feels super weird to not be wearing my real actual ring that I've had for nearly two decades.Plus there's an odd feeling about replacing what was an expensive chunk of metal with a $0.75 piece of polymer.

If you're not an old like me, you might not know this, but computers used to feel snappy - you clicked on a thing and it was immediately on the screen or moved or the button appeared pressed in on the next screen update. There weren't animations on every single hover, click, open, close, drag, etc.Everything felt basically instant and when it didn't and there was a hang or lag, you knew the computer was doing something hard. It was working on it. It was trying its best.

When you got a new faster computer those lags and hang times were shorter. You could feel it!But nowadays all the animations and stuff means the time it takes for UI to respond is more or less always the same even when you upgrade. A new computer no longer feels snappier or better - it's more of the same. The animations are slow and the computer is done doing what it needs to do before the animation finishes, so now the animation plays and THEN it does the work.Everything feels slower.

I'm not an AI fan, but I increasingly feel pressure to try out a "real" AI workflow at some point and not just occasionally use ChatGPT to search StackOverflow.I guess that'd mean something like Claude Code? But it seems like I have to spend money to use it.Also, to me, a lot of articles that talk about AI coding workflows give off the impression that the workflow is all about making more AI tools for your AI workflow.Which seems stupid.I'm left feeling like none of this is real.

I kinda want to just see how this all is supposed to work, but I'm coming at it from a pretty skeptical position. My experience asking ChatGPT code questions is... shall we say... highly mixed.I don't like how often it seems to be wrong. Or, sometimes, the code it spits out might look okay, but it's wrong about it!Like, one time it said, "Here's an implementation using CIImage" and hilariously the code used CGImage. Those are totally different APIs.How is anyone supposed to trust that?

@Migueldeicaza @jamesthomson are you using Claude Code? Also, one thing I'm confused about with all this is... how *often* is it used? Like, some comments/articles I've seen act like they don't even write code anymore - just talk to Claude. That seems.... optimistic.Other takes sound like they mostly still code by hand and just ask now and then for like, a quick ref or to spit out some boilerplate.
