That means that everything that spills there will work it’s way down to the Ohio river, potentially to the Mississippi, and contaminating everything on the way.This is to say nothing about everything that was put into the atmosphere with the National Guard’s brilliant plan to just burn fucking everything.

@billy_hughes Company uses large plot of land to dump toxic waste in barrels, covers it in clay, then sells it for one dollar to a school and doesn't tell them. School builds near the land, community pops up around it, decades of people getting sick as fuck, 90 percent plus exposure to cancer causing agents. Community finally finds out, entire settlement has to leave due to it being far too hazardous to live there. Real fucked up shit.

Johnson Controls is a big one for doing crap like that. Batteries. Easy to hide and bury. Sub divisions in the burbs, built in the 70s, 80s and 90s were hit by these waste-pits. Farmland on the edge of growing cities, kids not wanting to farm like the old man sold for a good price back them. Houses built, 5 years would go by and certain section in the division were coming down with Leukemia and other odd forms of cancers. The political reaction was, tough luck, get a lawyer. People who had the wherewithal or family that left the toxic home recovered, many others, mostly kids, died.

@Jim ever heard of Picher, Oklahoma? Discovered it when I did a road trip on Route 66. Entire town was surrounded by mines and the mining company was piling up waste all over town, kids were playing in it and it was leaching into the water supply. People had giant mountains of mine waste literally in their backyards. The federal government came in and forced the entire population to move out then tore most of the town down. It's a creepy, post apocalyptic maze of street grids with driveways to nowhere, overgrown grass and yet has large mining trucks still driving around everywhere

When would blowing up toxic chemicals and letting them drift and flow into the Ohio River of all places, be a got damn good idea? I heard that how big it is and how it flows will actually cycle out the damage, but. It does leave a good patsy to blame when everyone starts getting sick......I dunno. @billy_hughes @Jim Love Canal has no relationship to what’s happening in East Palestine whatsoever. The relevant chemical company which also got effectively taken over by the military for WWII used then state of the art techniques to bury their waste.The problem came when the city much later insisted on using that land, like for sewer service when the punched right through walls of clay to run pipes, and to build a school on top of all this!!! Only thing I can fault the company for is selling the land for one dollar instead of requiring the use of eminent domain which would have made the legal liability more clear.
