Briefly playing with #UbuntuTouch on the #Shift6mq, that's still on 16.04 but can deliver a "convergence" livestyle

@linmob I fear that the UBports devs will always be playing catch up. They're still working on migrating to 20.04 which is nearly 3 years old... 😕

@normandc @linmob they are jumping from 16.04 to 20.04 which means jumping to 24.04 is certainly possible.

@ahoneybun @linmob the point I was trying to make is, when they're ready to jump to 24.04, the Ubuntu 28.04 release will be in sight. We're 14 months away from 14.04, and 26 months from 20.04 EOL. This pace doesn't seem sustainable to me in the long run.

@normandc @ahoneybun Like I wrote: This was a major clean up, including stuff like getting Lomiri into Debian. Moving to the next LTS will not take as long. And if you want them to improve their pace, help them out. 🙂

@linmob @ahoneybun TBH the only thing I still care about in UBports is Lomiri. The whole OS' tech choices aren't for me. But a Debian or pmOS with Lomiri, now we're talking. (I did read that Lomiri had made it into Debian). Provided I can install flatpaks, or any package from the repos.(Also, not being a dev, not having what it takes to become one...)

@normandc There's way more ways than developing to contribute to a project, see e.g. https://navendu.me/posts/non-code-contributions-to-open-source/ 🙂

@linmob look, I'm gonna have to repeat it again, I'm sure I told you in the past: I was very involved in an open source community for 9 years. I had multiple roles, forum, wiki and bug tracker admin, I posted thousands of help messages. I even did PPA packaging, I spent countless hours, easily 20hrs a week if not more. I burned out. Even nearly 4 years later, I don't feel like getting back on the saddle. And I feel that I gave much more than many FOSS users ever will. So that's that.

@normandc Sorry, I am a goldfish (I simply can't remember every interaction) - and I really don't like to see friendly projects being talked down with 'they'll never accomplish x'. This kind of talk has never helped anyone. Don't trigger me and I won't trigger you without intending to. :-)

@linmob being realistic is not talking down.I don't see how the UBports people can improve their prospects. They admitted they were struggling to get contributors, I admit that was a while ago so things may have changed. But due to Canonical's core decisions for Ubuntu Touch, and UBports staying the course, it's not a typical Linux distro, with unusual restrictions. I'm guessing potential devs prefer to contribute to more traditional distros.

@normandc @linmob I'm curious, what do you mean by "unusual restrictions" ? (haven't tried UBports yet)

@lolgzs @normandc @linmob Read-only filesystem. You can't just use the package manager normally like a traditional distro. All the apps use web stuff. If you want to mess around in a shell you use some sort of virtualized thing. It feels too close to Android in a bad way in how it limits you.
