#Ecuador is a beautiful country. We explored Quito and the surrounding areas like Otavalo, Laguna de Cuicocha, the Quitsato Sundial which lies directly on the equator and the Galapagos islands. How did you like it? https://backpackandsnorkel.com/Ecuador/

@backpackandsnorkel We were in Manta and Montecristi 6 or so years ago. Manta is a bustling tuna fishing port and it was interesting to see boats unload at the pier. Some boats have their own helicopters for fish spotting! While the area was certainly worth the visit, it wasn't the cleanest place we had been.We sponsor a family in Portoviejo through World Vision and we always thought we'd like to go back for a visit. Perhaps someday... #Ecuador #travel

@silveradventures I first heard of Manta on one episode of House Hunters International and it seemed like a beautiful small town. I believe it was hit real hard by the 2016 earthquake. Does that mean you went there after the quake?

@backpackandsnorkel Yes, we were there in late 2017. We didn't see a lot of quake damage there, oddly enough. We did see a fair bit of damage in Pisco, Peru. The Manta area has beautiful beaches and apparently the area to the north of the city is a prime parasailing/hang gliding spot. I can't provide any personal opinion on that, however! #travel #Equador

@silveradventures that is real good to know. I am currently working on an itinerary for Peru, Bolivia and Paraguay, but Ecuador is not on the list. So, I will keep it for future trips. Was Manta your favorite beach town in Ecuador?

@backpackandsnorkel It was the only one we visited, unfortunately. I think Crucita (just north up the coast from Manta) may be the better beach and "tourist" town. We looked at Crucita a being a good winter snowbird destination a few years ago, but we didn't make it back there. My only concern about Peru at the moment is the political unrest. I haven't heard much about that lately though. #travel

@silveradventures I have followed Peru threads on tripadvisor and it seems that the unrest is taking place in Lima and much of the rest of the country does business as usual. We have been to Machu Picchu and will not go there the next time.

@backpackandsnorkel I had a look through some photos of that trip and this is the best I can find from Manta with the beach. I've also added a photo of one of the tuna boats with the spotting helicopter on the roof. It is certainly a working port, but the southern part of the city looks like a modern beachside city.

@silveradventures Yes, the beach looks very much like the showed on House Hunters International. A tuna boat with a spotting helicopter. That is interesting.

@backpackandsnorkel @benfinch That is an excellent piece. Still a lot to be wary of for those #travelling to Peru. Lima is nuts at the best of times. It took us the best part of 3 hours to get from downtown to the port on a weeknight with nothing special going on. I can't imagine what it would be like with mass protests, police action and route closures. I'll do my best to stay up to date. Thanks Ben for your Toot!
