A smart person who I follow here had an interesting (and I think correct) take on Musk's temper tantrum when Musk learned his Tweets were not getting much engagement any more. The person suggested that this was a problem for Musk because he intended to earn advertising revenue through his active Twitter feed.I want to credit the person (I'm an appellate lawyer so I source everything) but I don't remember who it was.Who was that smart person?https://www.platformer.news/p/elon-musk-fires-a-top-twitter-engineer?utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email

@Teri_Kanefield Do you mean for himself personally (as if he was an influencer) or earn advertising revenue for Twitter?

@Teri_Kanefield There's been some interesting discussion in the comments on Ars Technica. An addiction expert said a while back that Musk was addicted to Twitter. As such he thought everyone used it like he did and was surprised to learn less than 20% of accounts actually posted regularly. He wants engagement! Then the perceived loss of Tweet visibility was in line with what addicts want. But I like this idea he thought he could monetize himself because a narcissist WOULD think that.

@notthatkaren Yes, the suggestion (I think) was that Musk gets so much engagement that he could earn money inserting ads on his own feed.

@Teri_Kanefield It's a neat idea, but he's infamous for losing his temper and firing people without good reason. His companies have astronomical turnover rates for anyone who interacts with him.

@Teri_Kanefield Temper tantrums from a narcissist. That's an everyday occurrence for them. More likely EM's ego was wounded because he couldn't handle not be as popular as he thought, and being confronted with one of his hair-brained schemes blowing up in his face.

@Teri_Kanefield It's a funny idea, but hard to imagine someone worth 100B's of dollars would spend 10B's of dollars to take his cut of the "ad revenue" which might amount to... $1M a year, if it's crazy generous?Occam's razor: he thought that he could get more engagement by making more people see his tweets, but Twitter was ALREADY trying to maximize his engagement, so additional people he's exposing himself to are reacting mostly by blocking him, or leaving Twitter.

@Teri_Kanefield Hmmm….feels like a giant “quid pro quo” set up. Want a little town square manipulation just drop a ton of advertising dough-not on Twitter but on his personal feed. Kinda like Trump and his hotels.

@notthatkaren Earning revenue for twitter was how I understood the comment.

@Teri_Kanefield Thanks for the clarification. I deleted my last comment as it pertained to me thinking something much shadier was going on.

@Teri_Kanefield I think that's unlikely, it's more likely that ads are doing badly and he was hoping to boost them by retweeting himself and then realized he doesn't have as much reach himself as he thinks (lots of people have blocked him, lots of his followers are bots or trolls who are only there for the White supremacy, etc).

@Teri_Kanefield is it even order of magnitude reasonable that onetwitter account would generate enough revenue to matter ?I really don't know

@Teri_Kanefield That would be every thinking person's conclusion. Of course musk's motivation is the same as trump's, to maximally monetize his fame. It's also a bonus for him to squelch other voices.

@Teri_KanefieldMy only interest in anything he does is can I use it to demonstrate to more people why they should join the #TwitterMigration.
