Have now got a better handle on my reading---> @readwise Reader---> Readwise---> Obsidian workflow. Loving it. Have even slightly changed the habit of years, and I am using my Obsidian "Readwise" section as a reflection point to decide what I want to bring together in my writing. (Previously I automated this and pulled things together by tag) #Workflow #academia

@jnyrose @readwise could you share your workflow? I’m looking to change my reading/note taking but haven’t found any flows that seem to fit me…trying to get a few more ideas before starting making my own…easier to amend than start from scratch

@StephZihms @readwise Yes! Right. I keep thinking I need to write this up. I PROMISE I will write a blog post this week. With pictures and everything, LOL.

@StephZihms @readwise Right. I gave it a go. I am the least pithy writer on the planet, so it is long. I hope it helps! It's on my blog here: https://www.unabridgedopinions.com/blog/i3dwev4ai02t3txk4udo5ok8c6vqdf

@jnyrose @readwise thanks for writing this - I use some different apps for reading and storing my PDFs but I think I can create a similar structure for my apps…trying to stick to it and make it a sustainable practice

@StephZihms @readwise you are so right. The important bit is that it doesn’t feel like more work to take the notes than think about the topic!

@jnyrose @StephZihms @readwise I have to look into your tools, but I think it's fascinating that you sidestepped citation mangers in this whole process. The searchable notes and tagging of Endnote 2 (I only recently threw those 6 floppy disks away!) made my MA thesis research manageable, and the infinite supply of notes per item was a key part of my happiness with Zotero. (and Zotero has recently included a PDF viewer, so I'm sure that absence was part of the sidestepping)

@Rudydoesbooks @StephZihms @readwise yes! I know. I have tried Endnote/Zotero/Mendeley. A combination of a few clunky bits and the fact that I really need it to integrate with notes I take on Kindle, import webpages and etc has just meant I never folded them in to the workflow. Also, our managed desktops do things like break the Zotero/Word integration sometimes. Which is just the worst.

@Rudydoesbooks @StephZihms @readwise I also actually like the way I can use Obsidian to manage everything (including random other notes on a topic that I wouldn’t attach to an article for example). That plus the canvas layout was what made me end up with Obsidian in the end.

@jnyrose @StephZihms @readwise I'm playing with Obsidian Canvas now, and just mapped out the work for a committee I'm chairing. very easy to do in that! I think I'm in love with the arrows.

@Rudydoesbooks @StephZihms @readwise right? It is somehow so instinctive! Just a really powerful way to play around with ideas.

@jnyrose @Rudydoesbooks @readwise I really like Scrintal which is like the canvas. I use Zotero for references - mostly because it’s linked to retraction watch and alerts me when a paper in my library has been retracted. I also like hand written notes - I can upload images to Scrintal. But I’m still trying to figure out when to do what and how I often I need to summarise my notes. Hopefully with the new job I can implement something from the start…
