If you live in a coastal or low-lying region, it's probably a smart idea to be checking how many decades it'll be before your home is underwater, or the surrounding area is swamp or bogland. Ideally, the mass migration away from such regions should already be underway. If your home is going to be completely worthless in, say, 20 or 30 years, moving now might be a sensible option.NASA provides a handy list of tools for investigating how bad things might become for you, your family and neighbours.https://sealevel.nasa.gov/#ClimateChange #SeaLevelRise

@BarrenPlanetWhere I live, not only has the sea level not risen in the last 30 years, but new beaches have formed. This is one of the reasons people are skeptical: personal experience does not match.

@post On the other hand, there are beaches here in England littered with concrete structures, such as toilet blocks, that have fallen off the cliffs due to the erosion caused by rising sea levels! There's also a house near where some of my family live, that the owners can't sell because half the back garden has already collapsed into the sea, and it's only a matter of time before the entire property goes the same way.

@BarrenPlanetMmmh why “caused by rising sea levels”? Erosion happens independently from sea level rising or not

@post If the rate of recession of the cliffs in these areas had been for going on for the past few centuries, rather than for only the past few decades, whole towns and even most of a whole peninsula would have been claimed by the sea.You can't erode anything indefinitely!

@post @BarrenPlanet Luckily we have actual global measurements of sea level rise, so we don't have to rely on personal opinions about personal experience of a single place.https://www.climate.gov/news-features/understanding-climate/climate-change-global-sea-level

@hydropsychePeople sharing first moment averages to make a point when it comes to climate change is one of the reason I’m so skeptic they don’t actually know what they are talking about.

@BarrenPlanet interesting differences for the Finnish coast where I live: south coast ( #Helsinki ) sea level set to rise by 30cm by 2100, while on west coast it will drop by more than a meter due to the Fennoscandian land uplifthttps://www.maanmittauslaitos.fi/en/research/interesting-topics/land-uplift

@BarrenPlanet "Beginning to look for options now" is certainly sensible, but why "moving" now ?Or do you mean "sell it now before the suckers understand that they're getting suckered" ?

@lienrag But what other options are there, realistically? For most homeowners, the home is their most valuable asset. If you're worried about "suckering" the buyer, is selling up sooner rather than later not the kinder thing to do?Personally, if I found that my home was likely to start developing subsidence or other structural issues 30 years from now, due to the rising water table, I'd put it straight on the market. Who am I to check with the buyer whether they intend it to be their forever home? For all I know they have a happy decade there, then sell during a housing market boom and make a killing! None of that's any of my business. But my retirement? That is my business.

@wifsten That is interesting! And I bet they'll be a few folks pointing to that local sea level drop as evidence that sea level rise is a myth. 😉

@BarrenPlanet Well, in civilized countries retirement is socialized, so I guess that we have a different perspective there...

@lienrag Here in the UK we do have a state pension, but it's the lowest in Europe, and the local authority-run care homes leave much to be desired. So yeah, we simply don't have your "options", and this probably does explain our differing perspectives.
