I was completely unaware of a certain Pulitzer Prize-winning national security journo's fascist-adjacent views as regards Black community organising, and would like to express to all my Black followers that I'm profoundly sorry for not knowing this, especially when it has been so widely discussed. There's simply no excuse for someone as well-informed as I am completely missing those discussions.I will strive to do better.

@CrazyMyra I ain't gonna do the whole Old White Guy, self-centering , weaponized victimhood crybaby routine.I fucked up in not knowing something important to groups I care about, and that's all on me.So a full, unqualified public apology it is.

@banjopat I already have, and did so at length in January 2022 - *before* the US propaganda campaign had fully kicked off - and have been studying the topic since 2014.There are dozens of other posts even here on the fedi - never mind anywhere else - but I have neither the time nor inclination to find them all for you.https://c.im/@BarrenPlanet/109697168979231864https://c.im/@BarrenPlanet/109322863624666555https://c.im/@BarrenPlanet/109933059796606601

Among the most beautiful facts - and it is a fact - is that the most brilliant man, a man who revolutionized physics and transformed our understanding of the universe, in later life refused to teach anyone other than Black Africans about his ideas. Wouldn't give the sane privilege to white people, not even those from his own Jewish heritage.Because Einstein understood, he got it. He understood everything. An extraordinary human being.

If you're going to apologise, then do it goddamn properly, and don't be pulling in no excuses to sugarcoat that shit.

@chuck88 @kyozou @georgetakei No, I raised the possibility that the leak may have been justified, while pointing out that none of us actually know for sure. I also said that perhaps he deserves to go to jail, or perhaps not.

@kyozou @georgetakei What, and just take it for granted that the official line is trustworthy because we don't know for sure that it isn't? Erm, no thanks.Until the contents are analysed, none of us know either way, and the only ones jumping to conclusions are those assuming that he's done wrong.

@chuck88 @kyozou @georgetakei Perhaps I should have put it so succinctly myself. Thank you.

It's always struck me as a paradox that those who want more public ownership of services and resources, tend to be more alert to the dangers of big government (and institutional power more generally), while those who profess to want smaller government tend to be more willing to trust the state and judiciary, and even knowingly extend and abuse those powers in oppressive ways, whenever it suits their interests. As a corollary, it's usually safe to assume that those shouting most loudly about "liberty", are the ones most likely to remove the freedoms of others if given half a chance.

@Richard_Littler @Peternimmo I was about to answer "Yes, that was he", but decided not to speak for you. You're among the first people I followed when I landed on the fedi last November. Great work, thank you. 👏

Shout out to @RichardJMurphy , whose long economics threads at the other place were becoming legendary, but who chose not to do them here because every single post would appear in follower's timelines. Too much. Unlike a certain Canadian-British blogger (for whom I still have a great deal of respect) Richard is a gentleman, and slotted into the culture here immediately. If you're interested in economics, I'd recommend you give Richard a follow. 👍

@kyozou @georgetakei I didn't rationalize anything, and have already read said news reports. When Ed Snowden leaked those NSA docs, the actual, full docs were available to check against the reporting. That's not happening here, which may be for genuine national security reasons, or it may be for other reasons. I admit I don't know, one way or the other. You seem to be saying you do know, but won't say *what* you know, which suggests you actually don't know, either.Yet you're still prepared to get punchy in a debate in which you have no real points to make.

@kyozou @georgetakei Oh and by the way, if you don't understand that the world's intelligence agencies - including Russia's - had those docs within minutes of them dropping, then you also don't understand the extent of today's digital snooping. There's no reason not to discuss anything that's already a matter of public record.

Whichever country you're from or happen to reside in, it's a good idea when talking to people online, to remember that they may not posses the same citizenships as you, nor share your acute concern for your "national security". Indeed, they may not actually give a flying fuck, nor have any good reason to do so.

Oh you want to talk about American foreign policy?Okay. When your country is militarily occupied by my country, talk to me. There are more than 12,100 US military personnel spread across 14 sites here in the UK, including 11 RAF bases - with Menwith Hill in Yorkshire being the largest US National Security outpost in the world (around 1000 Americans stationed there). Talk to me, when our foreign intelligence chief is openly telling people *on your own soil* that they'll intervene in your internal politics to prevent an unfavorable national election result, as Mike Pompeo once did here. The sheer, unadulterated arrogance. When all those conditions are met, fine. We'll talk.

@emilymbender I've just asked ChatGPT to list potential negative impacts of AI. It's response in full:There are several potential negative impacts of AI that have been identified by experts in the field. Some of these include:Job displacement: AI and automation have the potential to replace human workers in many industries, leading to job losses and economic disruption.Bias and discrimination: AI systems can perpetuate and even amplify biases present in their training data, leading to unfair or discriminatory outcomes for certain groups of people.Privacy and security: The use of AI for surveillance or data analysis can potentially compromise individuals' privacy and security.Autonomy and accountability: As AI systems become more advanced and autonomous, there is a risk that they may make decisions that are harmful to humans, without appropriate mechanisms for accountability or recourse.Ethical considerations: The development and use of AI raises ethical questions around issues such as transparency, fairness, and accountability, which must be carefully considered and addressed. These are just a few examples of the potential negative impacts of AI, and it's important for developers, policymakers, and society as a whole to carefully consider these risks and take steps to mitigate them as much as possible.2 / 2ChatGPT Mar 23 Versio
