       I tried out Mastodon's new --prune-profiles option to tootctl, which removes profile data from stale remote accounts not followed by any local users, and wow:Visited 362283 accounts and removed profile media totaling 69.8 GB

       @misty yeah this is the number one pain point for hosts, especially people self-hosting. looking into migration to another software is on my to-do list but every month it's just easier to pay the bill again

       @misty Why the heck was it pulling profile info from elsewhere? I would expect the server to only do it whenever a user clicks on a profile and it loads a local copy...

       @Foxhack It’s accounts whose posts have been seen here in the past. Until now those could never be cleared out, so posts that haven’t been seen in years still had avatars, banners and so on we’re still taking up disk space
