Bing's super AI powered search engine is basically taking the kind of lazy regurgitated historical "facts" that you see repeated everywhere and presenting them as a definitive answer. Be prepared to see people grow ever more ignorant. I didn't use the word "distributed" in my question, but hey, why let that stop you bing?#hacking #history

@realhackhistory Good heavens. Anyone who thinks _distributed_ denial of service attacks are a starting point is ignoring a wonderful history, and any search engine which facilitates that is functionally malicious.I think my favourite variety of DOS attack, one which has long since seen its time for obvious reasons, was the black-page loop for fax machines. In the hidebound days of the past, many folks were upset at receiving unsolicited bulk mail, either electronically or otherwise -- but as these operations expected to receive _some_ revenue, they required a point of contact. Many opted for fax, or facsimile, machines in order to receive orders. And so, some persons intent on revenge found that by creating a loop of black construction paper and running that through the outbound line of a fax, they could cause the recipient's machine to spew out nothing but black paper -- until the ink ran out or the machine caught fire. (This also tied up the line, a nice side effect.)#hacking #history

If you can flood the web with enough nonsense it will become facts through the magical, transformational digestion and regurgitation of the all knowing AI!

@realhackhistory Just to toss in some data points, here's what Google and Bing are showing me. (I don't have access to the ChatGPT functions/results on Bing yet.)Google's "featured snippets" have always been horrible and very often wrong. That they'd keep them, after all this time, still riddled with errors, gives me little faith either company will bother getting this right.

@fortyseven Weird that you got the correct answer from Bing, but I got 1996 when I put in that same query?

@realhackhistory Aye; I thought maybe some 'personalized' response was being given, but I tried it logged out and still got the same for both engines.Something must be tinkering with the results -- regional, maybe? Searching from the US here.

@fortyseven That's a wildcard! In my mind the answer is: http://www.platohistory.org/blog/2010/02/perhaps-the-first-denial-of-service-attack.html

@fortyseven Although if we really want to get into the weeds there were various articles about physically impeding computers back in the 60s, like this.

@theogrin @realhackhistory That reminds me - I've talked to UK phreaks who were active in the 60sThey would pingpong a call back and forth between two local exchanges (CO's)By doing this you could occupy all the junction circuits that linked the two exchanges, effectively isolating them from eachother. The intent usually wasn't to deny service, it was to hear the cascade of sounds you get as the call is finally put throughDenying service to a villiage/small town was just a side effect.

@theogrin @realhackhistory That's not to say it was /never/ done maliciously - just that the people I talked to never claimed that they had done.Oh, and I've absolutely been told off by grumpy museum volunteers for demonstrating this to friends in a UK museum. The cascade of clicks and ping noises you get as the junctions all go through was worth it though, and you can be sure I'll do it again next time I visit!
