Cloudflare jumping into ActivityPub servers and hosting."Today we're introducing Wildebeest, an open-source, easy-to-deploy ActivityPub and Mastodon-compatible server built entirely on top of Cloudflare's Supercloud. If you want to run your own spot in the Fediverse you can now do it entirely on Cloudflare."https://blog.cloudflare.com/welcome-to-wildebeest-the-fediverse-on-cloudflare/#CloudFlare #ActivityPub #Mastodon #Hosting #Servers

@sohkamyung What's the going rate for selling one's soul to the devil? 😉

@fitheach No idea. I have not used Cloudflare directly, so I have no idea if it is a deal with the devil, an angel, or you get 'eaten' by Cthulhu, for that matter. 🙂

@sohkamyung Not serious, of course. It is a measure of the recent success of Mastodon that the big providers are not only taking notice, but, also offering services.I can see the attraction of using Cloudflare. However, it is a concern when Cloudflare becomes such a significant "middleman".

@fitheach In this case, Cloudflare appears to be just a ActivityPub service provider. The announcement does say this: "Wildebeest is not a managed service. It's your instance, data, and code running in our cloud under your Cloudflare account."

@sohkamyung Yes, indeed. However, the effect is the same: more traffic going via Cloudflare.

@fitheach @sohkamyung Not sure if the analogy is apt, but sort of like railroad companies owning their own sections of rail and train yards in the US? So, you can transport whatever freight you want, but we supply the rail (CDN) and the yards (servers) for a fee of our choosing and not market price (because we're a monopoly).

@tkenben @fitheach @sohkamyung Except in this case, in order to get the cargo to the customer, they can't accept the cargo by any other means but by rail. The railroad also logs the engine, engineer, conductor, and for each train car, its source, destination, car ID, and cargo. It stores all that forever. If anything smells fishy about a new train coming through, it gets a red signal and positive train control remotely stops the train until the engineer can prove it's legit
