don't think an effort to compile a big #mastoadmin knowledge base is going to get off the ground unless several people are willing to back one such base together and leave their egoes at the door.

and we have ways of making decisions as a group: propose ideas and then vote on them. move to next idea.

3/was hoping that a big #mastoadmin knowledge base was something i could take credit for setting up, but of course, other people had the same idea. having just one guy back such a site isn't gonna work anyway, i think. needs to have a team behind it. so i'm hoping we can assemble such a team.

4/proposal for problem statement:it is a problem that updated field knowledge of running a Mastodon instance is not codified (compiled and indexed) in an easy-to-search way."field knowledge" would be stuff that the maintainers of the official documentation doesn't want to include in there, roughly speaking.it might touch upon some Linux system admin topics that are relevant. or quirks found in particular pieces of software, or with popular cloud providers.a good amount of this information is possible to find in random blog posts via Google. but i think we could be compiling it better.#mastoadmin

5/it might also touch upon the minefield that is Fediverse moderation - in as neutral a way as possible - to at least make new players aware that there is a playing field, and that differing perspectives exist on how the network should be moderated.#mastoadmin

6/it's 100% possible to propose "let's back this solution that is already running" and have a vote on that.that's one way of creating momentum.now, if everyone's going to propose their own site, this is fine, but like in the Eurovision Song Contest, you can't vote for your own country.#mastoadmin

7/There IS also a real problem with Mastodon's official documentation though. It's quite incomplete in places. Issues with getting S3 storage to work properly with a non-Amazon provider is what prompted this thread in the first place. Information about what the different S3/AWS-related environment variables do is lacking from the documentation, and it hasn't been fixed in years.#mastoadmin

@thor you've already poked your nose in the program code -- something I usually wait too long to do, myself. I'm curious: since it's Ruby, is it full of the monkey patching that the Ruby millieu is famous for?https://blog.appsignal.com/2021/08/24/responsible-monkeypatching-in-ruby.htmlHow readable is the code, if you wanted to start from first principles and just document everything from a sysadmin perspective?

@thor I submitted a PR adding descriptions for S3 env vars in November. It's a no-brainer, but it still has not been merged. And there are a lot more PRs like it. I wish they'd add add some community maintainers.

@jgillich i was putting forth a proposal to have a big knowledge base of field knowledge but the official docs themselves are also in need of work tbh
