It could be argued that anyone paying for anything on Twitter -- Blue Checks, $1000/mo corporate gold checks, API access, advertising, etc., is now supporting Musk's political agenda and his disgraceful public statements, and that this support may not reflect well on those supporters.

@nebkor @KeithJChouinard Not yet. But at some point, as the situation worsens, continued support of the platform in any manner -- including as a free user -- will become increasingly problematic.

@nebkor @KeithJChouinard There just aren't friendly alternatives for many current Twitter users, and especially for persons and orgs who have spent years building up followings, using Twitter for customer support via DMs, etc. Since Mastodon is largely actively hostile to Twitter users who want to migrate, they're mostly stuck for now.

@lauren Anybody that pays for anything at #twitter at this point is certainly supporting what seems to be a $40b-ish version of Truth or Parler, which IMO is directly supporting biased communication. I've not been a fan of #tesla since it's inception, and the recent #elon shenanigans have reinforced the optics of trying to out-asshole BMW drivers.I really have mixed feelings about SpaceX though. And I honestlt don't know why.

@clankgy1 SpaceX is the most risky to be dealing with. The U.S. has become too dependent on it for critical missions including DOD, and that's incredibly shortsighted (though, to its credit, the government seems to have finally realized some of the risks and appears to be moving faster to have alternatives available). Starlink will die as soon as Musk gets tired of the expense -- it is not viable in the very long term financially.

@lauren If only the government new how to get Internet to rural America. I can't stand musk, but he managed to solve the rural Internet problem in less time than Congress has spent talking about it.Sigh.

@Sunny He didn't solve anything. Too expensive for most people who need it, and tomorrow he could decide he's tired of it and shut it down. Depending on Musk is foolish beyond measure.

@lauren The choice is have it, or have nothing. "Having it" is not foolish. So what's too expensive when the choice is nothing? You're saying that's the smarter choice?

@Sunny His actions show that he is on our adversary's side. It's that simple. And the U.S. should move to end any and all relationships with him and his companies and quickly as legally possible and practicable. There are no "middle grounds" in the face of Russian atrocities.

@lauren TBH, the only real reason I have mixed feelings about SpaceX is that their reusable boosters and rocket technology is intriguing to me.But that fascination disappears for me with manned missions. NASA already screwed the pooch by ignoring/missing a critical o-ring inspection, and I would imagine the cheaper/faster mentality would lead to more tragedy.

@clankgy1 Letting fascination with technology (which most of us have here) undermine our concerns about fascism is the road to ruin.

@clankgy1 @lauren If your goal is to avoid products and companies where "rich assholes with objectionable views" own at least an eighth of their stock, good luck with that ;)(I used to work in the auto industry a while back. Detroit's executive culture can be summed up as an even mix of misogyny, racism, and the flaunting of wealth and power on visible luxury)

@nafnlaus @clankgy1 You're missing the point. None of them -- to my knowledge -- ever twisted their companies into pushing their personal views publicly in such a manner as Musk does (an exception may be Henry Ford in the context of his time). Having racist, fascist views is one thing, using your company to promote them is something else again.

@lauren @clankgy1 Huh? What "personal views of Musk" has Tesla been expressing? Tesla's "pushed views" are "It is important to transition the world to renewable energy as soon as possible".

@lauren @clankgy1 Casual Observer was talking about Tesla. And I'll repeat, Tesla's message is about the importance of a transition to renewable energy. It's not at all like Twitter's message, which these days is a bunch of alt-right and Libertarian tripe. Which is itself very different from SpaceX's message, which is about the importance of becoming a spacefaring civilization.

@lauren I have a .au government client that we run a bot for to post public safety related messages to Twitter, which got killed about 7 hours ago. I suspect I will end up advising the client to pay whatever Elon decides to charge to make that start working again, and I’ll die a little (more) inside when I do.
