The problem with the death penalty isn't that the state might kill the wrong people, or that it has no deterrent effect, it's that it's ethically wrong to the point of being purely evil for the state to kill its own citizens. We're not subjects, existing at the whim of divinely appointed rulers, we're citizens who elect people to govern us so that everyone's lives are better. That's entirely inconsistent with state murder.

And, yes, I realise that way too many governments have forgotten that their job is to improve things for everybody and not just their rich mates.

@CyclingJourno There is not a single example of a state where the imposition of the death penalty has lowered the murder rate. Not one.

@Remittancegirl Of course not. People who commit crimes in general don't expect to get caught. Our justice system is completely broken in that regard

@CyclingJourno @Remittancegirl In the early 1800s, before the bloody code was abolished, it was not uncommon for professional pickpockets to be hanged in public. Meanwhile, other pickpockets worked the crowds at such executions. The Home Office interviewed prisoners awaiting execution and confirmed that seeing someone publicly executed for a crime didn't deter them from immediately committing the exact same crime.Execution isn't a deterrent. Conclusively proven, 200 years ago.
