New W3C Community Group proposed for Service Discovery on the Web: https://www.w3.org/community/blog/2023/02/08/proposed-group-service-discovery-community-group/The intention is to expose DNS SRV records and mDNS along with other mechanisms (like .well-known) to web apps via a unified API.This will allow things like WebMail clients to find mail servers based on email address or a @matrix client to find a homeserver based on a MatrixID. It can also allow web apps to find devices on local networks.If you're interested, please support and join the CG!

@peter @matrix What's wrong with SRV records? If anything, I think we should vastly expand the use of SRV records.

@ocdtrekkie @matrix Expanding the use of SRV records is one of the goals here.The problem is that client JS code in a browser can't do DNS lookups, so can't access SRV records today and has to use .well-known URL fetches instead.This is about adding an API to browsers to allow client code to perform SRV and TXT record lookups via a simple JS method. We also want to allow mDNS lookups to allow finding devices on the local network, such as IOT.

@peter (weakly worries about the layering violations intrinsic in such a proposal, but we are already in a post DOH hell world, so who is even listening to the gray beards anymore?) @matrix

@byterhymer @matrix I have concerns too, but there’s a legitimate need for the functionality and as you say, work-arounds exist.So, join the CG and help us get it right?

@peter Maybe! I can't help but wonder if any parties from @iscdotorg might have salient perspective on such subjects to share as well? @matrix

@peter @matrix isn't that already covered for email with @thunderbird ISPDB ?

@usul @matrix @thunderbird Not really, it doesn't cover small, private servers. For example, none of the ones I manage are listed, but they all have SRV records...It's also a central registry, which has it's own set of problems, like scalability, control, fault tolerance, etc.And is someone going to set up something equivalent for every other kind of service? Not likely.What about services behind firewalls?

@peter @matrix @thunderbird For smaller ones the .known URL works, but of course the wiki is gone and I can't find the current doc. Behind firewall proper known url works.

@peter @matrix @thunderbird trying to find where the documentation for autoconfig is g, because the links at https://github.com/thundernest/autoconfig are broken.

@usul @thunderbird I’m aware of Thunderbird’s autoconfig, and Outlook’s too, and set them up for my servers. But they’re both non-standard and unique to each product. I also setup SRV records for my mail servers as iOS mail respects those.A simpler, standardized solution that also works for other kinds of services is what we need, and the combination of SRV and TXT records gives us that (see how LDAP uses TXT records alongside SRV for the rest of the config).

@peter I'd be interested in that if it used DNS and mDNS exclusively. I'm not up to speed with modern web practices but I am familiar with DNS, mDNS and DNS-SD, and at one point prototyped a web accessible DNS-SD API via a browser extension. I don't have an affiliation for a W3C account but I might chime in once the group is going.

@peter @ocdtrekkie @matrix So theoretically, if I had a private photo server on a closed network at home, but also had a Tailscale (https://tailscale.com/) network set up, I could be anywhere, a web app could ask for whatever photo services I have access to, and my private server could pop up to populate a file picker? Does that sound right?

@peter @ocdtrekkie @matrix Or android apps on my phone could set up web servers and my desktop browser could pull up those services?

@captaincalliope @ocdtrekkie Yes to both, that’s what mDNS can deliver.

@captaincalliope @ocdtrekkie though you’d have to be on the private network to see a server that’s hosted there, unless it’s proxied by something public (or you use a VPN to the private network).
