       @foone my first thought was PETSCII or ATASCII, but those put A at C1, not A1.

       @svgeesus @jeffowski my favorite German saying: “If nine people sit down at a table with a Nazi and don’t complain, you have 10 Nazis at a table.”

       @growlph @foone the fix becomes more wrong as the satellite drifts out of its designated orbit. GPS satellites are basically just synced atomic clocks, the receivers compare time differences to determine where they are relative to the satellites (the clocks appear out of sync due to time of flight of the different signals). They also know where the satellites are supposed to be. If the satellites aren’t in the right place, the fix can be precise, just wrong.

       @foone you also lose WAAS and AGPS, so accuracy drops as soon as ground support goes away, and we’re also back to the days where it can take 5-30 minutes for a receiver to lock on.

       @jwz @timbray I like the idea of a “duress” finger (and/or PIN). Use that finger (or code) to unlock and it wipes the device instead.Not quite failsafe, but it at least creates a risk/disincentive to just put someone’s finger on the reader, or force them to divulge their PIN.People more at risk of police harassment could use the common finger, e.g. thumb, index as the duress, and a less common finger, e.g. ring or pinky to unlock.

       @SomaFMrusty I’m glad they did this, but why-o-why isn’t scraping opt-in rather than opt-out?

       @koalie @m2m I’ve been using it for years on a 2010 MacPro tower. I had to upgrade the graphics card, but other than that, no major issues. Currently running Ventura. I also maxed out the RAM and switched to a NVMe drive, overall performance is fine.

       @mattblaze paraphrasing a friend of mine, “if you can afford a Rolex, you’re wealthy enough to not care what time it is.”(This was in response to Rolexes not being that great at keeping accurate time.)

       @foone @cstross yeah, I also hate the line that it “sometimes hallucinates wrong answers”.“Hallucinates” isn’t an accurate term, but it would be better to say “it *always* hallucinates the answer, it just sometimes happens to be (mostly) right.”(And when it’s obviously wrong, people just laugh and move on rather than question the whole thing.)

       @mcc and it teaches programmers to think through, structure, and design their code better, rather than use generated code they don’t understand.This is a product I’d actually use.

       @jwz I’m on the verge of standing up a SearXNG instance. In addition to being a private meta search engine, it can filter results.

       @foone there is the whitespace programming language… https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whitespace_%28programming_language%29I’ve been thinking we need an adversarial font that can be read by humans but confuses OCR.

       @futurebird Transistors? No, start with mechanical logic gates like the Z1 used. Then maybe fluidic gates, and work up to transistors. Soldering skills in 4th grade sounds about right.When I was in high school I was building LANs for Commodore PETs and C64s. Designed the network card, line drivers, network wiring and connectors, on-wire signaling/protocols, and all the networking software. We sold them to schools for their computer labs. This is all doable.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Z1_(computer)

       @foone I still have a PCMCIA CPDP modem you could use for that SMS entry idea…(I used to surf the web on my Newton with it…)
