       @lauren Reference to Eliza amuse me. A good friend of mine ran a MUD for over 20 years. It had a bot in residence which handles mail between players. The boy was a standalone program which used the same interface as players to talk to the MUD server so to players it just looked and behaved like a player. It regularly passed the Turing test because…1/2

       @lauren …my friend had a key insight. He gave it a manic, insult-laden personality. No one thought something THAT rude could possibly be a bot.

       @lauren It astonishes me that people don't get this. Conversing well enough to trick a human isn't difficult. Coming up with meaningful and accurate new content __is__ difficult. #eliza

       @lauren It might be time to reread Weizenbaum's _Computer Power and Human Reason_.  I wonder how it holds up?
