I did not have time to write up my thoughts about the inflammatory essay about copy editing published a week or two ago, but this piece by @RookwoodEditing does a fabulous job.https://editorialartsacademy.com/2023/02/03/no-copyediting-is-not-stuck-in-the-past/h/t @KOKEdit

@grammargirl @RookwoodEditing @KOKEdit Oh my gosh, a responsible editor will ingratiate themselves to a linguist or two, in order to keep up with what language is doing.

@grammargirl @RookwoodEditing @KOKEdit This article is great. I had far too many (raging) reactions to the original article to respond. This response is spot on.

@grammargirl @RookwoodEditing @KOKEdit The inflammatory stuff tends to come from people who've either never been edited or who've had extremely bad copyeditors. And make no mistake: there are TERRIBLE copyeditors out there. The good ones are GOLD

@grammargirl @RookwoodEditing @KOKEdit Agree with this so much. A couple decades ago I was an editor at a national magazine who hugely appreciated a trio of copyeditors who were --Goldilocks-style -- low-medium-high on the grammatical orthodoxy scale. I learned so much from them. I saw it as being in conversation, explaining our rationales and figuring out how to put the best copy on the page. An invaluable part of the process even if sometimes GRRRR haha.

@grammargirl @RookwoodEditing @KOKEdit As I read the original piece, I kept thinking, “No, that’s *bad* copyediting.” Copyeditors like that give the rest of us such a bad rep.

@grammargirl @RookwoodEditing @KOKEdit Although I did sympathize with the whole “working on hard copy in a closet with a pile of reference books nearby” thing. Ah, memories.
