Seeing all those lecture halls at #FOSDEM full of people without masks makes me sad. I know that conversations are harder wearing masks, but just sitting there and listening? What a missed opportunity to prevent spreading disease.This behaviour is the reason why I still don't feel like going to conferences again. Not because I feel unsafe with my mask, but because I feel like a total outsider.@phpledge

@geewiz @phpledge ten bucks says that the people who report that conversations are harder with masks are people whose masks don't have a NIOSH rating.

@JamesWidman Conversations are harder with masks - for people with autism anyhow - there's no denying that, it's the same with phones vs video calls. If I don't see your lips moving I have to guess a lot harder which sounds you are making. Or if you're making a joke.@geewiz @phpledge

@juliank @JamesWidmanI'm neurotypical, but my hearing gets worse in noisy rooms, for example in pubs or at conferences. When I was at DrupalCon Prague end of last year, many people thankfully wore masks, but not seeing their mouths move made conversations much more exhausting for me.

@geewiz @juliank @JamesWidman Interesting! I'm aware of the McGurk effect, but considered it more of a curiosity and a corner case rather than an indication that people use lip reading as a complement in normal conversation. I think I look at people's eyes and hands more.If I'm in a noisy room and have trouble hearing someone speak I might close my eyes to hear better. I might even lean in and look away to give them one good ear instead of two distracted ones.

@clacke I think I'd be worried of quickly making the conversation awkward by not looking at the person speaking. @juliank @JamesWidman

@geewiz @clacke @juliank @JamesWidman If they don't have a full face mask, have you considered looking at their jaw? The jaw moves in a similar way to the lips. It's not as effective though.

@geewiz @phpledge I still #mask at every #conference. Even the #Texas ones. 😷🤠#COVID19 #pandemic
