"As paperclip-maximizing artificial life-forms, limited liability corporations are on a remorseless, ceaseless quest for ways of reducing the cost of their inputs, and if payments to creative workers can be squeezed, they will be."#CoryDoctorowhttps://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2023/01/have-you-tried-turning-it-and-again-rethinking-tech-regulation-and-creative-labor#corporations #labour

@strypey sadly people do not seem to see anything wrong with value maximization and are even hostile to people who point out the increasing problems with the whole shindig.Protestant Stockholm ethic.

"Advanced economies around the world have spent the past 40 years expanding copyright. Today, copyright lasts longer and covers more works than ever, with higher damages and lower bars to securing them than ever. Companies that sell entertainment products are more profitable than ever, and the entertainment sector is larger than ever. But the share of that income going to creative workers is lower than it has been in generations, and it is continuing to decline."#CoryDoctorow

"The fight that matters isn’t tech vs. content—it’s corporate consolidation vs. creative workers and their audiences. We won’t win that fight with ever-more-Draconian copyright laws - we’ll win it with interventions that are laser-focused on increasing worker power, blunting corporate power, and transferring cash from the corporate side of the ledger to the creators’ side."#CoryDoctorow

@strypey this article was extremely hard to read. We all know where the EFF stand and who is financing them. Ugh.

@mark I'm a bit out of touch with...> copyright shenanigans underway in Aotearoa... any suggestions on where to read the latest?

@strypey I'm not aware of any recent progress. A thread on here implied that the public sector isn't in any hurry to implement the extension of copyright terms that we signed up to with the UK and EU. But sooner or later a bill will have to go to Parliament and go through a rubber stamp consultation process. I'll see later if I can dig anything out.

@tim> We all know where the EFF stand and who is financing them.I'm not sure what this means. If you're accusing Cory Doctorow - a published novelist who makes his living as a writer - of doing the spadework for some nefarious agenda, the onus is on you to spell it out *and* back it up.

@strypey it’s duly noted that Cory is an author. However is vehement arguments against strong copyright and intellectual property law puts everything else that he is saying into question. The EFF is known for their lobbying work against copyright for companies like Google and Meta: https://web.archive.org/web/20140226201712/http://tech.fortune.cnn.com/2012/07/30/google-and-facebooks-new-tactic-in-the-tech-wars/

@strypey I seriously don't get why they don't understand that profits rely on sales which rely on having consumers with money to spend and that employees are consumers. And when are the 98% gonna understand that's where their power lies???

@tim> The EFF is known for their lobbying work against copyright...... when it goes against the interests of both the public and creators. As Cory points out in his piece, all the Big Tech companies now own, or are at least partially owned by, Big Content companies. That's putting aside the interest they have in copyright to keep their software source code proprietary. I've read various pierces claiming that EFF are lobbying for corporations. These arguments don't even make sense.

@tim> intellectual property lawThere's no such thing. Just patents, copyrights, trademarks, and various other laws that work in totally different ways, with completely different purposes. "IP" is PR nonsense invented to support the expansion of corporate power. See:https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/not-ipr.en.html
