@science_quotes options aren't entirely readable. And I wonder about the definition of "scepticism". Because there is the dangerous kind (i.e. sceptical about claims of other people) and the real kind (i.e. sceptical about your own assumptions and beliefs). The answer depends on the definition you use.

@science_quotes 👆 Voted "context": depends if human fallibility has been fully catered for. (Former research scientist.)

@science_quotes When certain fields of science (archaeology, for instance) start making assumptions that turn into 'beliefs' about what and why things were, based on the way we are 'now', or cultural biases, they lose me completely. Sometimes I wish there was more skepticism about old ideas, concepts, and theories, and more open-mindedness towards new possibilities...So many things, over time, are proved wrong. This has been going on for hundreds of years.

@science_quotes Interesting results. I spent my PhD questioning published work and my own. It led to some new discoveries, and I view that as the only correct way to do science.

@science_quotes I see proper skepticism as being a real positive. It should mean not accepting things without evidence. But cynicism - that is not accepting anything that challenges your existing views - leads to terrible bias. And it is easy to move from one to the other.

@science_quotes I didn't say it is wrong, I said it is dangerous. The danger lies in the fact that you judge without enough critical appraisal of your own assumptions. Some of the most sceptical ppl on the planet are climate deniers and antivax activists...

@science_quotes skepticism is required, actually. What we want to avoid is using the term "skepticism" to conceal what is actually denialism, confirmation bias, or skeet shooting (i.e., designing experiments with an eye strictly towards tearing down other models, a term I picked up in a psycholinguistics paper by Ardi Roelofs)

@science_quotes I voted context because the intent of the question is unclear. Skepticism, as used in scientific research, is intended to reduce cognitive biases by training researchers to be cognizant of them. I would say it reduces bias. But doesn’t eliminate it. I’m a published scientist.

@science_quotes Not a bias, but a vulnerability. It can lead to excluding things that seem unlikely or unsupported, but are faint signals of something yet to become clear - that's a vulnerability. Not biased though, since there is unlikely to be any unifying characteristic of faint signals, and the false negative will likely be random in natureQualitative researcher here

@science_quotes Replication bias has an interesting interfetence with scientific scepticism...

@science_quotes I'm not a research scientist, my degree was psychology and Philosophy. I know that the opposite of scepticism is dogma.
