       The official name of the country with the horrible earthquakes is Türkiye. This is the spelling the country has asked people to use for their name, and the name that is accepted by the United Nations.https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/jun/03/turkey-changes-name-to-turkiye-as-other-name-is-for-the-birds#Turkey #Turkiye

       @grammargirl I find that a bit of a relief. It's still "Turkey" on Wikipedia, though, which is often quick to register other changes.

       @cautionarytale I'm curious what other people think, but I imagine it is better (more respectful) to spell it with a regular "u" and get most of the way there than to use the old spelling.

       @grammargirl US State Department says "meh.""Note: The official conventional long-form and short-form names remain “Republic of Turkey” and “Turkey”, respectively. “Republic of Türkiye” should be used in formal and diplomatic contexts. The conventional names may be used in place of or alongside “Türkiye” in appropriate instances, including U.S. government cartographic products, as it is more widely understood by the American public."https://www.state.gov/countries-areas/turkey/

       @cautionarytale @grammargirl You don't need a new keyboard to type characterssuch as ü. On my Mac keyboard if I press and hold the "u" key I see the following options: û ü ù ú ū. I can just click on the variant I want or type the number that goes with it. It's similar on an iPhone or Android: long press to see the options.Windows (bless their hearts 🙄) make it much more complicated: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/how-to-use-the-united-states-international-keyboard-layout-in-windows-7-in-windows-vista-and-in-windows-xp-e05ce3ed-11f0-8fc2-498e-a214fa6b898fBut it's easier than it used to be when you had to memorize four-digit codes

       @grammargirl @cautionarytale I do it so often I have a lot of them memorized: long-a + 8 = ā. Long-i + 4 = ī. long-e + 2 = é.

       @grammargirl NPR (June 2022): "The country called itself Türkiye — which is pronounced "tur-key-YAY" — after its declaration of independence in 1923, The Associated Press notes. Much of the Turkish public already recognizes that name, though the anglicized version is commonly used inside the country as well."^I have been curious if it would be used much outside of the UN and Türkiye (even if they've used it since 1923) since one letter is not in the English alphabet.https://www.npr.org/2022/06/02/1102596510/turkey-changes-name-turkiye-united-nations

       @grammargirl I was curious, and checked some posts from my one of my old archaeology professors who often travels to Turkey/Türkiye. In the past 6 months most of the sites she shared from used Türkiye, but one organization used both name variations in different posts during that time period. In previous years most used Turkey.The last post she made in January was about this historical site called Göbekli Tepe in Türkiye with this link from UNESCO. https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/1572

       I only trust Google Translate pronunciations ~90%, but it does have the Türkiye pronunciation.https://translate.google.com/?sl=auto&tl=en&text=Türkiye&op=translateAlso, on a Mac computer keyboard, you can hold down a key for a second or two, and it will pop up the accented letters for you to choose from! (Same on a phone.)Both tips courtesy of @bodhipaksa :)

       @grammargirl @cautionarytale Yeah, we dont care. it was a patenting issue for the state i believe, and people may want to jump into patriotism vagon for the fun of it, but calling the states name Turkey in the english is not demeaning in the slightest. Call it Turkey, call it TC. Call it big brown bird for all i care. We don't pronounce Amerika with an american "A" either lol.

       @grammargirl @bodhipaksa If you use a non English language frequently on a Mac, you can add the keyboard for that language in the settings. What’s cool is that you can use a keyboard shortcut (ctrl-space) to switch between them. I frequently go back and forth between Spanish and English and use this shortcut all the time. While press and hold is convenient for little used languages, it’s a rather inconvenient for frequently used languages. Typing accents with Spanish is super easy. It’s done with composing characters where you type the accent of interest then type the accented character.

       @grammargirl Word choice does make a different, and having visited Turkiye I appreciate you pointing out the proper self-name. The country is not a bird. It is always important to understand that what words we choose can bring along as baggage subtext and unfortunate meanings, or important information if you are trying emphasize something. Words considered synonymous are not the same -- they are subtly or vaguely different.

       @grammargirl I respect Turkey has changed the official spelling of their country's name at the UN, but that doesn't have any effect on other languagesThe French call my country Royaume Uni, or Angleterre, which is fine, because it is their languageSimilarly I'm not going to start referring to Germany as Deutschland, because I am not a German speaker

       @grammargirl I’m surprised when newspapers that jump to conformity with AP style guidelines, are so slow in acknowledging the updated name of a country.
