Well, after a friend pointed out that Michael Whelan was on Mastodon, I thought, wait, maybe there's other SF or Fantasy authors that I haven't encountered, yet. I did a search and followed about a dozen or so more authors. They should be at the top of my Follows on my profile. @futurebird I tend to agree with what you've said of search, but since I didn't see it mentioned by others in the thread: I've bookmarked Google with AI turned off via an address parameter. Google AI is indeed a parody of search, so this mostly restores search. Turning on Verbatim in search tools can help search focus on exactly what you asked for. There is a binary choice and you don't like either for good reasons. I did not say stop complaining. Read what I wrote again. You can complain on the lifeboat, you can complain when on shore, and you can complain so the boat you take next time isn't broken so it doesn't sink on you. You can't change past decisions, but you can help make the future ones if you ensure there is a future if you get on the lifeboat. If you drown, you dead. This is a drowning situation. The past of politics shows it can change over decades. It can change locally within years, and that's where we can make more instant gratification choices and activism pays off well. But if you cease to have a democracy, because one choice in this #election clearly wants that, trying to change things becomes dangerous to you and your loved ones. It is the lifeboat that you need to get on to. Drowning isn't fun.

@bennomatic @temptoetiam @futurebird Think about it: Most religions enforce gender roles. Media and popular culture glorify gender norms. Male gender roles teach female domination, so is it any wonder, if not taught any better, that men find it hard to treat women as equal, as peers, or are willing to accept them as superiors? College with "too many women" stops being a place where "a man" (pejorative) can find brainy marriage prospects (to answer your question) that can make a man's life more equitable—and instead becomes intimidating. Just as a room of mostly women is comfortable for a woman compared to one full of men, the opposite is very true. Sadly. And what can we attribute that fear to? Teaching gender roles instead of each person is A Person exactly the same as you regardless of strength or sex. This is why I am an author. I try to depict worlds that aren't scary because of gender because that isn't necessary to be fully human. Other than you can't get the police unless someone if about to murder you right now, everything is just fine. Nothing burning†. No smoke anywhere. The protests are civil and under control, with a handful of well meaning people wanting to be arrested to make a point that ICE raids are bad, and enough idiots (dozens, maybe) that want to play at rioting and being crazy, which plays into political agendas.Keep in mind that Media and TV only show action, outrage, and violence because it attracts eyeballs, more than "everything is alright," because it sells ads. The spectacle helps an administration that is trying to manufacture reasons for a military takeover of the city when the city is taking care of the situation just fine.I haven't seen the Marines. Question for #writersOfMastodon, #writingCommunity, and #SF #ScienceFiction writers and readers. A beta reader is complaining about me using Centigrade in my Mars novel set 100 years in the future. Asks me to include ºF also. I feel using other than simply Centigrade is out of character for the book and time period. I worry about throwing the reader out of the story.
