So last day I tried to install official #Minecraft Java edition launcher on a #Windows computer.I visited the official site, but there were no download option. I remembered that in the past user must be log in to see it. So I logged with Microsoft account that have licence for Java edition.But still, after clicking 'download' and selecting 'computer' version, it only shows an option to buy "Java+Bedrock" bundle.Okey, so after quick search with "download site:minecraft.net" I managed to see actual download page.But there were two versions, one for "Windows 10/11" and one for "Windows 7/8".I got the first one, clicked download, run... and after couple of second it showed popup saying that no Microsoft account was found.Apparently this .exe is only a trigger that starts installation from Microsoft Store, but am not logged in to Windows as it was not my computer.Child was giving me very impatient look at this point.I tried to get the "Windows 7/8" version, it installed the launcher, but... error. "Something went wrong".My mind started to think to just look at the logs what happened, but this is Windows, no logs or any meaningful feedback for me.I could try some third-party launcher, but at this point there was not more time to waste and I do not know what launcher is good right now.

And no kidding there, I was going to give #Minetest with Mineclone2 a chance.I, am, shocked.That's of course not the polish, near the easter egg packed experience as og, but there is great amount of work put into this.Actually for normal survival everything important is there. A 8-12 year old woudn't see the difference. While I adapted quickly to somehow different feel of interface and animations. We had good time playing together.

@didek Minetest website references to the store too - distro's repos or ppa. But no account needed and it's free and gratis.

@anedroid And I managed to actually install it fast on Windows.Joined the same world from Windows laptop, my Linux PC and Android phone with no problems.

@didek"I do not know what launcher is good right now"GDLauncher is good right now. It's also under GPL-3 license and available on Windows, Mac and Linux.Sadly, it's an electron app, but nothing is perfect.

@didek MineClone5 was actually started by a different developer and they haven't been active in the past months.MineClone5 isn't even available on https://content.minetest.net anymore, apparently due to a copyright issue.In short, you want MineClone2.@anedroid

@didek It's a $30 game that's distributed through the Microsoft Store on Windows 10/11. That's how the license is managed. So if you want to run it on Windows 10 or 11, you have to be logged into Windows with a Windows account that is licensed to used the game.You might have a philosophical disagreement with this approach, but it's effective, reliable and straightforward and it works for millions of users.

@Sliotar Who would have thought I needed to click on "about" and then "free trial" insteaf of big "Download Minecraft" on main page.To clarify:I did not say that downloading the game was not possible or even really hard.This was just a quick summary of how getting it look when I tried to do it quicky while kids are waiting. Eventually we would figure it out, but this was frustration compared to "flatpak install minecraft" on Linux or one click install for Minetest.

@didek It uses the Windows Store for license management, and you wouldn't log into the Windows Store "as it was not my computer". Minecraft Launcher is a Microsoft Store app - https://apps.microsoft.com/store/detail/minecraft-launcher/9PGW18NPBZV5As for flatpack, did you even try to open a Terminal window and typewinget install "minecraft launcher"

@didekI'm using MultiMC from https://multimc.org/ which handles everything fine. It "can" use "just" the Java license, but Mojang is heavily pushing the move to the Windows license. MultiMC will handle that also. I regret you went through all that with kids waiting in the background. @Sliotar

@didek Do you have some better recommendations? So far, I see people laud Mineclone2 over Mineclone5. Is there a different mod to consider here, for a survival experience?

@Catwoman69y2k Mineclone5 is just an unstable/dev branch of Mineclone2.I don't know any other mods. Even for Minetest, I just play Mineclone on it.
