Hey everybody ... iconify your 32 different chat applications and reminisce with me for a moment.Remember that very brief window in the mid 2000s when you could use your private #XMPP server to #chat with almost everyone you knew, including on many of the popular commercial platforms? How far we have fallen.

@elb What do you mean "remember"? I run my own #XMPP server for my family/friends and communicate with everyone I know over it today, in 2023. (I guess I've been doing this for over a decade now... How time flies)

@moparisthebest that sounds unusual. Almost no one I know outside of the FLOSS community uses XMPP, or an XMPP-compatible service, any more. For frame of reference, I have been a developer on the Pidgin project (although idle for some time) for over two decades. It's not like I don't know the IM landscape.

@elb Frankly, pidgin XMPP support is 15 years behind, and every time I've heard someone complain that XMPP is "old" or "doesn't work well", it's because they tried it with pidgin which doesn't support anything people expect from a modern chat system.Pidgin's XMPP impl doesn't support multiple clients logged in at once (carbons) or history (mam) or e2e that supports multiple devices (OMEMO or PGP) or sharing files in group chats/with multiple devices (http upload) or audio/video calling.Meanwhile people can install #snikket and have all those and more on their mobile phones, and dinosaurs like me can also use great desktop clients like Dino or gajim.I also take it a step further and get all my SMS and PSTN phone calls over XMPP via jmp.chat and am connected to all my IRC channels over biboumi. There are also bridges to walled gardens like slidge and aria-net.org , but so far I haven't had a need for those.

@moparisthebest I agree that Pidgin's XMPP support is behind, in some sense of the word behind. That doesn't change the fact that no one I communicate with outside of the FLOSS community uses XMPP any more.I do understand that there are bridges to other protocols, but that's not what I'm talking about.

@elb Sure, none of my family/friends used it either until I set up a server and now they all do, for nearly a decade now.

@elb i am not sure we have fallen far enough. i still have to maintain an #xmpp server for a half dozen diehard users. old services have long asymptotes.

@enoclueWhy not just update your XMPP server, then it is no longer "old"? 🙂@elb
