@paradroyd @jim_in_austin SDF has been actively testing servers to add capacity the past two days, it's probably transient and related to that; see the @SDF toots over the past couple of days for details!

I know the messages waiting icon on Discord is supposed to look like a paper inbox, but ... it's an RJ45 jack, right? I can't be the only one who can't see it as anything else.

I took this photo for other reasons, but some of y'all might enjoy this #retrocomputing #terminal #keyboard from some sort of 1980s #IBM terminal system. It's a Model F, but with removable key tops like a later Model M (note the missing 1 key cover) with a record-oriented layout and some obvious dedicated function keys for ... some application or another. Including original 1980s schmut that I've never had occasion to clean off!

@publius I'm not even sure what protocol it speaks. The connector on the end of the cable is a screw-collar-locking DIN of some kind. I'm fairly certain it goes to a smart terminal (3270-style, probably not actual 3270) of some kind. There's tons of model information on a sticker on the back, I'm sure I can figure out how to talk to it, but it's going to return scan codes, not characters, and I'm guessing the scan codes will match the 1 key location for all similar model F keyboards.

Speaking of my #NAS; I have a jail on my (#TrueNAS Core) NAS that runs a few proxying services, including an #ntpd. It has this in /etc/rc.conf:ntpdate_enable="YES"ntpd_enable="YES"So ... why doesn't ntpd start at boot? service ntpd start starts it immediately. It hasn't started at boot for literally years, I have to start it by hand on every reboot. Why?

I just started to panic because I saw that my NAS (which manages, among other things, nightly backups!) had only "28 GB free". But then I realized I was looking at the RAM column.Still, the array is getting pretty full, I probably need to expand it sooner rather than later.

@penguin42 Someone else mentioned that it should be |. That's unfortunate, as it greatly reduces the chances that I can get the correct key top! Also @thomasfuchs is _at least_ the second person my Mastodon instance hasn't auto-followed to their new home 😠

I have a copy of Code Complete, and ... I can't find it.Now, Code Complete is not the largest book I own, but like, it's LARGE. And, if I recall correctly, it's snow white. I feel like it should not be too difficult to locate. Yet here I am. #bibliophile #YouHoardICollect

I think one of the things I like most about Mastodon (and most of the Small Web) is that links are links, not clicktracker shortlink redirect black holes. I can copy a URL and paste it into my interesting links list and it will probably be 100% usable. I can open a link in a different profile or a private browsing window and expect that I'm not being tracked. It's a little thing, but it's a big thing.

@akkartik M-x mastodon in Emacs still just shows the text as it is! I'm replying to this post in plain text, and able to view your post in plain text. There's no JavaScript in sight!

PSA: If you're sending out an email that is essentially plain text, just send it as plain text. I don't want to open a word document and find ten lines of text with minor and irrelevant formatting inexplicably put on letterhead.

Hey everybody ... iconify your 32 different chat applications and reminisce with me for a moment.Remember that very brief window in the mid 2000s when you could use your private #XMPP server to #chat with almost everyone you knew, including on many of the popular commercial platforms? How far we have fallen.

I just backed the Shift Happens campaign on Kickstarter, which ends in three days:https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/mwichary/shift-happensI'm plugging it here because it's fairly close to a stretch goal which will turn a 100 page B&W extension volume into a third full-color volume, which would make me happy to see.If you like keyboards, take a peek. I do understand that it's pricey, and no one should feel bad if it's out of their price range for an art/history/nerdery book.

Someone who's not me has listed one of my email addresses as their Venmo account and I get tons of transaction confirmations, payment requests, and all kinds of personal information. Venmo provides me no way to remove my email from their account. I contacted their support, but nothing happened.Allowing people to sign up for ANYTHING without verifying their email address is dumb, but financial information seems particularly dumb.

The University that I teach at uses Outlook 365 for email and calendaring, because their IT administration is very, very bad at their jobs and somehow has not yet been discovered for this.I am using their "Bookings With Me" to allow students to book meetings with me and have them added to my calendar ... and the booking link is ONE THOUSAND FOUR HUNDRED AND NINETY-SIX CHARACTERS LONG. I pasted it into an email and I was sure it was a mistake, but no matter how I get it, it's 1496 chars. WHAT?

Suppose that one has a problem with acquiring large and heavy items out in a field and needing to haul them out. (Items like boat anchor radios, old computers, and Teletypes, just for example.)Any recommendations on a folding or otherwise highly portable hand truck that might help out in a scenario like that?#hamradio #retrocomputing #hoarding I mean #collecting

I plan to teach a course next semester on interactive programming (ideally in residential environments). I am looking at using Medley Interlisp, some Smalltalk (maybe Squeak?), and I'd like to use a MUD/MOO. It looks like as far as retro-MUDs, LambdaMOO is the ticket. Is anyone aware of a modern MUD engine that is _fully interactive_ like LambdaMOO is? (By which I mean, not like Evennia where you write Python _outside_ of the MUD and then load it in.)#HigherEd #ComputerScience #MUD #MOO
