"The Warriors" is an unusual 1979 film about a lethal conflict between New York City youth gangs that all takes place in one night. Filming was on location throughout the city, capturing the area at that time like few films I've ever seen. Very controversial when released -- some theaters backed out of showing it -- the film has become a true cult classic over the years, and I recommend it highly.Currently free on #YouTube Movies & TV (likely U.S. only, sorry): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdt76k7OrGw&pp=sAQB

@lauren I like that your cat seems to have an opinion about "The Warriors".

@lauren All I recall from this movie is the phrase "Warriors, come out to play-ee-ay!".

@lauren My high school showed it on film night in, oh, 1984 or so. One of the most memorable movies I saw at that age.Not sure what the intended message was for the school. "Don't join a gang or you'll be chased by a bully clinking beer bottles together."

@lauren They did - first time I saw that movie was at film night. We also saw stuff like The seventh seal, Jag är nyfiken gul (mildly NSFW), Casablanca and more. Someone at that school had really good taste in movies.

@jannem When I was a kid, my residential summer camp made the mistake of not only putting me in charge of running the projector for the weekly movies (there was no TV reception or TVs up there), but also of *choosing* the movies that were ordered in by mail. Previously to my taking over they had selections like "Captains Courageous". I altered the programming, uh, considerably.

@lauren Warriors (without the definite article) is a series of books about Cats. Maybe they should do a mashup

@lauren I can dig it! It's... pretty weird, but worth seeing at least once. It's also educational how a lot of the 1970s sci-fi dystopias look pretty nice compared to our reality.

@lauren I find The Warriors a strangely compelling film. The last time I saw it, I noticed the author of the book the movie was based on (Sol Yurick) mentioned in the credits and decided to read the book. I was pleasantly surprised to find it available as an e-book from the library. The book was interesting but not quite so entralling as the movie version.

@lauren I saw it at the old (now demolished) Shopper's World theaters in Framingham, MA back when it first came out. I loved it because of the highly stylized "gangs" depicted. If irrc there was a gang on roller skates. Definitely going to rewatch on youtube.
