interesting mastodon quirk. I'm not seeing a lot of replies to widely boosted posts.

@charlesrandall I think this depends on the software you're using. The Mastodon web app will (to my knowledge) only show you replies it has itself seen (because they got pulled to it for some reason, like follows). Some client apps (like Tusky) will attempt to fetch a complete list of replies off the originating instance. At least that's how I understand this when @simon raised this issue a while ago (any new insights?)

@hmans @charlesrandall By default your instance will only see replies if they are from people who are followed by users on your instance OR they are in-reply-to a post by someone who is on your instanceSo the missing replies thing most affects posts that are boosted into your timeline from an author not followed by anyone on your instanceIf you're on an instance with a LOT of users - like https://mastodon.social - this problem will hardly affect you at all

@hmans @charlesrandall Looks like https://grumble.social/ only has 15 active users so it's going to be affected a TON by thisMy own https://fedi.simonwillison.net/ is just me, so I see this all the time

@simon @hmans oh yeah that makes sense. I ultimately don't mind a whole lot -- it reduces noise. and I can still see them when I view the post directly, which is a fine workaround. it lets me engage with engagement when I am feeling it.
