What are some cheap but reliable EU virtual private server (VPS) hosters? I'm in the market for some.#hosting #vps

@jgillich@mastodon.social Currently the borg.social server has a 4 core 2.1Ghz 4GB server, that'd be €16/month at Hetzner, idk if that's cheap but I don't think I'm spending that much per month by hosting from home yet

@dwarf Scaleway has always been my go to option.

@lifeofguenter@convo.casa very competitive pricing! The only "downside" is the upload/download speed not being a guaranteed gigabit. Overall though, very nice.

@dwarf yes, bandwidth is indeed limited at lower packages you get more at the bigger packages. They throttle, so its not even shared/random. I am easily able to achieve the speeds as advertised in US, DE and SG though.I would separate high bandwidth from compute maybe.Or royalehosting.net ?

@lifeofguenter@convo.casa a fedi server doesn't need a whole lot of speed though there are moments where we push 0.5Gbit/s with borg.social, as long as it let's me burst like that it'll be fine

@dwarf there is some bursts allowed, but they do throttle as "advertised" - so the lowest tier you will hardly be able to go above 200Mbit/s.Then I'd rather suggest netcup.de (have not used them for 10+ years).Webtropia is usually pretty good, but they have not fixed their IPv6 for VPS for over two weeks (if you use CF that won't be an issue).Others I know are either more expensive per CPU/RAM or are capped at even lower than 200Mbit.maybe https://host-unlimited.de/vserver-mieten :D

@dwarf or host it on a used m1 mac mini - power draw should be relatively low :P

@lifeofguenter@convo.casa I'm considering the odroid h3(+) (https://www.hardkernel.com/shop/odroid-h3/), it seems perfect for at-home hosting and a definite step up from the odroid c4 (https://www.hardkernel.com/shop/odroid-c4/) I use now. I wonder if the mac mini is comparable in power use.

@dwarf e.g. just comparing:https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Celeron+N5105+%40+2.00GHz&id=4412vs.https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Apple+M1+8+Core+3200+MHz&id=4104I mean more than double the performance for 50% more power draw

@dwarf that being said though, thanks for the hint, odroid-h3 is really awesome on specs and pricing.Though also getting really close to Intel NUCs (or similar) - which are also pretty good choice for home price vs. watt vs. performance
